Modernizing Network Observability with IBM SevOne®

IBM migrates to SevOne, reducing third-party spend by millions and improving performance visibility

By the IBM CIO Organization

“The ability to proactively monitor and predict network performance has not only improved our efficiency but also positioned SevOne as a catalyst for further innovation within IBM.”

Breaking Through the Noise: IBM’s Shift to Intelligent Network Observability

In a world increasingly reliant on always-on digital infrastructure, visibility into network health isn't just helpful—it’s mission-critical. For IBM, with operations spanning 170+ countries and a complex IT ecosystem, traditional network monitoring tools were no longer keeping up. The organization faced rising costs, fragmented tools, and limited predictive capabilities.

The IBM Chief Information Officer (CIO) Organization, responsible for delivering and securing IBM’s global IT, needed a smarter, more scalable solution. That’s where IBM SevOne entered the picture.

Business Challenge: Complexity at Scale

IBM’s internal network includes:

  • 20,328 devices

  • 20 million flows per minute

  • 251 wireless LAN controllers

  • 12,472 wireless access points

Managing this sprawl using multiple third-party network monitoring tools created both operational and financial strain. It also lacked the predictive power needed to prevent issues before they impacted users. The CIO team set out to simplify, streamline, and modernize network observability—without compromising coverage or insights.

Transformation: Migrating to IBM SevOne

The decision to adopt IBM SevOne was driven by a need for a unified platform with deeper analytics and proactive insights.

The migration involved:

  • Retiring several legacy and third-party monitoring tools

  • Deploying 57 SevOne appliances across the enterprise

  • Integrating real-time data streams across geographies and devices

  • Collaborating closely with the SevOne development team for feature enhancements

According to Sean Davies, Lead Architect for Tools and Automation, IBM CIO Global Enterprise Network, “SevOne gave us a ‘candy store’ of metrics far beyond what we had before.”

Outcomes: Unified View, Measurable Gains

By consolidating systems into a single observability platform, IBM achieved:

  • Substantial cost savings by reducing third-party tool reliance

  • Increased network efficiency through real-time visibility and predictive analytics

  • Streamlined operations, empowering teams to monitor, diagnose, and optimize faster

  • Higher user adoption, thanks to intuitive dashboards and customizable insights

SevOne now provides a unified lens into IBM’s sprawling network enabling smarter decision-making and faster issue resolution.

Next Steps: Innovation Built on Insight

With SevOne now at the core of IBM’s network observability strategy, the CIO Organization continues to explore advanced use cases. IBM’s migration to SevOne is more than a tech upgrade—it’s a foundation for intelligent, resilient, and cost-efficient IT at scale.
