IBM® Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js 22.0, the follow-on product to Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js 20.0, is a server-side JavaScript runtime environment available on z/OS. Node.js is one of the fastest-growing language runtimes in the market with a large open-source community. The popularity of Node.js is driven by its simplicity and massive ecosystem with over two million npm packages that can be used instantly in applications. The planned availability date is November 15, 2024.

What’s New in IBM Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js 22.0

Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js 22.0 is based on the Node.js 22 community release which includes the following new features:

    • The V8 engine is updated to version 12.4, with new features including WebAssembly Garbage Collection, Array.fromAsync, Set methods, and iterator helpers
    • Watch Mode (node --watch) is now considered a stable command line option. With Watch Mode, changes in the watched files restart the Node.js process.
    • The browser-compatible implementation of WebSocket is enabled by default, to provide a WebSocket client to Node.js without external dependencies
    • The functions glob and globsync are added to the node:fs module, for matching file paths based on specified patterns
    • The efficiency of creating AbortSignal instances is enhanced, resulting in performance improvements in fetch and the test runner

Open Enterprise SDK for Node.js uses zEDC hardware accelerator for zlib-based compression and decompression, which provides significant performance benefits over previous software implementations. It enables clients to extend their core business-critical applications in their journey to application modernization, construct advanced API orchestration, co-locate Node.js applications with data, and leverage the I/O bandwidth of the IBM Z platform.
