Today, IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition for z/OS, Version 17 native container Java image is available on IBM Container registry (ICR)!
In this blog, I’d like to demonstrate a helpful use case scenario, on how you can leverage a containerized Java image on IBM z/OS Containers Platform (zOSCP) to increase speed from development to deployment of z/OS Java based applications. Developers can worry less about system setup/configuration, and systems remain predictable and repeatable across the application lifecycle for your z/OS Java applications. System administrators can also scale and load balance easily, by spreading the load on different Java-based containers and processors. Give it a try today!

Christina, the system programmer wants to provide a standard Java image for the z/OS application developers across the organization to use to develop their Java applications. To do this, Christina would run a command line utility to download the image from ICR and save it to the organization’s local registry. Christina, could then customize the image and configure it (e.g. Java tuning parameters like heap size, cache, etc) for the organization’s specific usage. This customized image is then made available to the application developers for their respective application development.
Deb, a z/OS application developer, downloads this image from the organization’s local registry and uses it to build her Java application. Deb follows the organization’s development process and utilizes the DevOps pipeline to deploy and test the new Java application image. Once test and the production-ready criteria have been met, the image can be deployed into the production environment.
With zOSCP, Christina can maintain a standard image across the organization while the developers have a self-serv isolated environment for their application development.
How to obtain the Java image for IBM z/OS Container Platform?
If you have any issues copying or pulling the image from ICR, please open a case against the IBM z/OS Container Platform product via IBM Support with Program ID 5655-MC3. For additional information on installation, troubleshooting and support please visit IBM Documentation:
