IBM Storage Defender and IBM FlashSystems C200

IBM Storage Defender and IBM FlashSystem offer a powerful data resiliency combination. With the just announced IBM FlashSystem C200, things will only get better. This article summarizes the benefits of using the FlashSystems C200 as a performance-optimized all-flash storage backup repository and how Storage Defender can help boost the data resilience posture of FlashSystem C200 workloads.

Capacity Optimized All Flash Backup Repository for IBM Storage Protect

Storage Protect is a key component of Storage Defender. It is the workhorse in a large number of companies and provides a very efficient scale-up architecture that can manage billions of objects and PB’s of data per server. FlashSystem is a very popular back-end technology for the Storage Protect server.

The capacity-optimized FlashSystem C200 offers higher capacity and better affordability than other storage technologies. This can save space, energy, and improve performance.

Specifics for the FlashSystem C200 include:

  • 1.1 PB raw configuration (24 x 46 TB Flash Core Modules) in a 2U form factor. For example, moving your data from storage arrays using 16TB HDD to FlashSystem C200 can help consolidate HDDs and save 71% rack space on average.
  • Great durability - designed for 5.5x more write cycles than industry-standard QLC drives.
  • Intended to displace traditional storage deployments that are backed mostly with disk drives.

The FlashSystem C200 is designed for usage with capacity intensive applications like Storage Protect. More specifically, it can be used for a Storage Protect server’s database and storage pool volumes. This combination provides a very performant and efficient solution (power, cooling and rack space).

As a Storage Protect administrator you want to understand how to properly size and configure the usage of a FlashSystem C200. Stay tuned! We are planning to provide a Storage Protect blueprint for the FlashSystem C200 to ensure proper sizing and a successful outcome.

Protecting FlashSystem C200 Workloads using Storage Defender

For primary storage, Storage Defender and FlashSystem ensure data resilience with features including immutable snapshots and real-time in-line threat detection. When you think about fault-domains and snapshot retention considerations, IBM Storage Defender’s data resiliency capabilities are further bolstered by comprehensive data protection capabilities that ensure backup and long-term retention copies are created outside the storage system.

For protecting primary workloads on the FlashSystem C200, Storage Defender provides options to:

  • Perform application-aware point-in-time storage snapshots (including Safeguard Copy (SGC) for immutable snapshots)
  • Application aware anomaly scanning of immutable SGC snapshots to identify good/safe copies
  • Copy storage snapshots into a backup repository
  • Manage synchronous and asynchronous storage replication

Final Thoughts

IBM Storage Defender and FlashSystem C200 will form a powerful combination for robust data resilience and protection against cyber threats. The FlashSystem C200 can be used with Storage Protect to provide a capacity-optimized all-flash backup repository. In addition, IBM Storage Defender provides comprehensive support for FlashSystems C200 workloads. This includes data resilience and compliance, early threat detection, and safe and fast recovery.
