What is the difference between Business Policies and Business Rules?

In the elevator in my apartment building where I live in France, its says “630 kg 8 PERS”. The business policy is “The building management takes safety seriously”. The business rule is “No more than 630 kg or 8 persons in the lift”.

Why is this useful?

Well, it allows you to organize your rules when designing and creating an implementation. In IBM Operational Decision Manager that means rules can be organized in projects and packages in the Decision Center repository for rule authoring. For execution they can placed in tasks in the ruleflow and deployed to Rule Execution Server.

When projects, packages and tasks represent business policies everything can easily be managed!
