Introducing Automation Services and Business Decisions (ADS)

IBM Cloud Pak for Automation 20.0.3 introduces the notion of Automation Services. An Automation Service can be authored in one of the designers and then published into a common catalog. Business developers can easily discover and call them in a low-code, consistent way regardless of where the service originated from or its underlying technology.


Below we'll see how business decisions can be published as Automation Services and easily consumed from business applications or workflows.


Step 1: Author a decision in Automation Decision Services (ADS)
Let's take an example with a fairly simple decision which computes a discount rate based on customer and product information:

As you can see in the above picture, this decision has 3 input parameters (green nodes at the bottom) and one output parameter (blue rectangle at the top), a discount rate.


Step2: Build and deploy the decision
When your decision is ready, Automation Decision Services 20.0.3 allows you to immediately tag it with a specific version identifier and build it so that it becomes available for execution.

Step 3: Publish your decision
Now, this version of the Discount decision can be published into the catalog of Automation Services, and consumed by any business developer who may need to get a discount rate.

Step 4: Use in other automations
For example, only a few clicks are needed to create a low-code application where you can enter information about the customer, the product to buy, and get the associated discount rate.

It's interesting to see that the various input and output fields where discovered automatically along with the way to invoke the decision and get the results of the decision.
