Could the concept of Rotating Item be used to build an IAS, and then apply it to an asset without the asset actually being a rotable in the inventory sense?

    Hi Tom,

You can add Rotating Item and Non Rotating both type of Items in Item Assembly Structure but when applying on Asset, it should have rotating item associated otherwise Maximo will not allow you to apply IAS with error- BMXAA0172E - Cannot apply IAS. A rotating item is not available.

    Hi Tom,

Yes, an asset or a location which references a rotating item can have an item assembly structure (IAS) applied. The asset need never be moved to a storeroom (a location can't be moved to a storeroom). You are using the IAS to build an asset hierarchy or location hierarchy, the IAS is acting as a model hierarchy. When you wish to use it as a model hierarchy best if all items in the IAS is marked as rotating. As it is not practical to work with more than three levels when building an IAS in Item Master, you can apply a different IAS to the third level assets (or locations) to build a hierarchy that will be 5 levels deep.

Thank you @Andrew Jeffery.  that's exactly the answer that I was looking for.

creating a hierarchy without the asset actually being moved to a storeroom.

    Hi Tom,

Assume LAPTOP is a rotating item. If you have 2 LAPTOPs, then you can tag them LAPTOP 1 and LAPTOP 2 and give serials/barcodes to them to distinguish them as two separate ASSETs.

Now if you have BATTERY as item without rotating tick, that means batteries are identical parts/spares and you do not need to tag / serialize them. They will not be tracked as ASSETs in Maximo, they are just ITEMs.

In short, rotating means that part corresponds to an ITEM and also tracked as an ASSET in Maximo while non-rotating means its only ITEM. I hope it's clear, don't get confused by rotating term. Please see the url below.
