  • 1.  MAS Upgrade Costs for customers?

    Posted 2 days ago

    Folks,

I have a client facing significant challenges with the cost of moving from 7613 to MAS. They're in a tough spot-too large for a basic SaaS solution but too complex due to their heavy reliance on MS SQL Server (which they receive at a steep discount) and deep integration with their Oracle ERP.

What's really causing concern is the 35% cost increase required to transition to App Points. For example, lets say they're currently spending $90K per year, but migrating would push that cost to $121,500-not even factoring in hardware expenses yet.

Is anyone else encountering similar issues? How are other organizations handling this? SaaS seems unrealistic for them, given their complexity and the fact that their IT team won't open the firewall to Oracle ERP. Meanwhile, the on-prem option feels financially restrictive.

Curious to hear how others are navigating this as we approach September.

    Thanks,

    Hello!

Yes, we also had increase, but it was little bit smaller, some 18%. Try to recalculate points needed, reconsider user roles. But there also is risk if You transition to not enough appoints, as buying additional will be expensive than transitioning that amount. And You know that, most probably.

Of course, hardware admins also were not happy about all hardware needed. At least here IBM could think of some solution, if customer doesn't need such high performance etc.

But there are not much options, that's the reality.

For us positive thing is, that we use included redhat and DB2, no need to pay licences there.

    Hi David

Assume you have considered using reserved app points? Reserved app points consume significantly less app points per user than concurrent and often, reserved app points suit the customer requirements just fine. Also regarding hardware and OpenShift configuration for non-production environments like DEV and TEST, there is no need to use a full OpenShift cluster with multiple availability zones (unless explicitly requested by the customer but I find no reason why anyone would do this). Are you migrating the customer to the cloud, like AWS? In AWS you can use RDS for your database and this can be good for a PROD environment but for non-prod environments there is no need to do this, and this can reduce your costs.

    Best Regards

    Hi,

We've guided multiple customers through transitions to our SaaS, customer-managed PaaS, and on-premise solutions. One observation here is that you haven't developed a comprehensive 1–3-year TCO analysis; instead, you're focusing on just one cost element. It's important to break down all aspects of total cost of ownership:

    Software

    Maintenance / Support

    Operational Overheads

    Opportunity Costs

Also, make sure you understand the full cost of your legacy system-particularly how it aligns with your organizational objectives-so you're making a genuine, like-for-like comparison. Regarding security requirements, I've yet to encounter an organization that doesn't integrate with third parties in some capacity. Of course, you'll want to tailor your strategy and conversations accordingly-always work from existing patterns, but be sure to reevaluate requirements, as there may be efficiencies to gain when replatforming.

    Hi David,

From what others have said below about App Points, you do need find ways to reduce Authorized is a good approach to lowering App Points needed.

The other issue you have about network on-premise with Oracle ERP and the firewall, message me direct and I can talk to you about how to address it.

The reason SaaS has a big cost in the industry is because they need to keep these systems up 24x7, backup solutions, anti-virus, malware and support teams. SaaS uses DB2 that require DB2 admins to manage backups and archive also.

    David,

Like Christiaan Lok said, you have to factor everything to determine the true costs.  You should factor in all of the following:

    • If going to SaaS, you can get a no-cost upgrade to MAS.  Some offer this.
    • Look at the SaaS provider having APP Points as part of the deal.  BYOL is never cost-effective.
    • If you are on AWS or Azure currently, determine the costs of that.
    • If you are going to SaaS, you also get an entire group that understand Maximo that supports the system.  There is value to that.
    • Some SaaS providers offer no-cost upgrades as part of the agreement.  This is a HUGE cost savings.

You need to look at the 3yr and 5yr cost.  For us, we actually would save money in years 2-5 over our current costs.

Exactly apples and oranges our MMS customers pay zero, nada, nothing for their updates / upgrades / onboarding it's all part of the service contract. So yes they face an uplift on the licenses that we can usually offset via strategy - combine that with no charge for a 7.6 upgrade and you can why we have less difficulty - and yes we even offer this as a satellite service so we can apply this methodology on premise.
