Just had similar task - needed to add some 40 new meters to metering group.
I updated meters and metering group with MXloader. Of course, meters were not added to relevant assets.
Then I tried to add to loader sheet for METERGROUP columns PROPAGATEMETERGROUP and METERINGROUP.PROPAGATEMETERGROUPMOD with value 1 and also tried Y, that didn't worked.
Then I removed metering group from all those assets, setting GROUPNAME = ~NULL~ and again updated with needed metering group. And that worked - new meters were added, and best thing - old values also wasn't removed.

Subject: Can a meter group be changed on an asset after it was associated with an asset
Thank you for the information. When I tried using asset template I received a duplicate task error because there were already meters on the asset. When was troubleshooting I found how to change a meter group. On the meter tab on the asset when I inactivated and deleted the meters the meter group field became editable. This method deleted all of the readings to that point but the meter group was wrong so when the change is made we have to enter new readings.

You can try to create asset template with that new metering group and then try to "Apply to existing assets".

We cannot change the meter group on a couple of assets we found were misclassified given an incorrect group. The meter group field is read only. There have already been meter readings, but we are okay to lose the existing meter readings.
I checked the security group application tab to see if there was a restriction on meter group as well as the data restriction tab. Also checked the application designer and that field inputmode is blank.
Looked for sig options and cannot seem to find a way to change a meter group.
