2017 Apptio Goals

Tue December 27, 2016 05:59 PM

You already know that TBM is a discipline. It's an ongoing practice. When Apptio capabilities are supporting your recurring IT Management processes, you are directly contributing to the success of your organization.

Many of our members are already doing this. In Dec 2016, when I asked How do you #UseApptio some said they were supporting multiple regular processes and others were just getting started. Wherever you are in the adventure, there are people in the Apptio Community who are just like you. So tell us what your Apptio related goals are for 2017. Which recurring IT Management processes or events are you going to support with Apptio?

Share your Apptio goals in the comments section and we'll put the power of community behind helping you get there.

As comments come in, I'm going to record them in this table for a consolidated view.

<UPDATE: Feb 8 - Thanks for your comments everyone!

As we continue to curate and enhance community content, I'll make sure to tag you in anything that aligns with your interests. We'll also do a mid year check-in to see how your progressing and if we've been able to help you. >

Connect our existing MSPS project and program data via a SQL connection, so we can further expand the power of Apptio to our PMO by providing real-time views into Program and Project spend.

This will further increase adoption to an even broader audience, and move closer to using Apptio as the one-stop-shop for IT reporting.

Look for more ways to promote TBM and Apptio use in our organisation.

Specifically, we will find key consumption areas (Networks, End User Services & Licences) and figure out how to best report on these.

Would be great if Apptio had OOB reports for such things ;-) #CustomersMakeUsBetter  @Jennifer Dinh

Yes! You are in the community archives now, impressive ;-) We had some great webinars and follow up sessions come out of these goals and even baked some of it into AAEP updates. Now that you mention it, maybe we'll do something similar this year.

Our primary goals for additional utilization of Apptio in 2017 include the following:

  • Utilize application portfolio reporting for our application rationalization efforts
  • Show back IT service costs to our customers
  • Tie in our IT CapEx costs to provide similar visability to what are currently able to show for OpEx expenses.

#ApptioforAll

Fri February 10, 2017 12:06 PM

Goal1: TCO - Establish a framework within Apptio to enable more accurate Total Cost of Ownership reporting in 2017 by more tightly connecting support resource time tracking to specifically named systems (business applications) and using this in our monthly cost allocation mechanism for support labor costs. Continue to expand this concept into Development, Vendor, and Fixed Asset cost pools by more tightly coupling these costs to the specific systems (business applications) that are the catalyst of each expenditure.

Goal 2: SAVINGS - Establish a framework for identifying and reporting on savings’ opportunities within Apptio to achieve an annual savings in 2017 of a target amount still under discussion.  Initial focus is on the server farm by reporting on individual server costs juxtaposed against server utilization factors such as CPU, Memory, Storage.

Goal 3: APPTIO FOUNDATION: Establish a new and improved foundational structure and effective operation for the Technology Business Management Office for 2017.  This includes re-establishment of a baseline of financials that clearly map and are justifiable against GL reported spend.  Evaluation of when to engage an upgrade to V.12 will also be performed.

Hi Doug - we, at Merck, implemented AWS reporting last year and we receive the billing data directly through a Datalink connection, and are planning to do the same with Azure this year.  If you want to bounce any questions around with us prior to your implementation, we would be happy to help.

In 2017, our goal is to implement the Apptio “Cost Transparency” and “Benchmarking” modules

Mon January 30, 2017 10:06 AM

We have just finished our initial implementation of CT and the Planning module (we are working within an EBM framework). In 2017 we intend to:

- add further reporting capabilities within CT so that Finance and other stakeholders can save time since the reports they were generating are automated in Apptio.

- track priority account expenses at a higher frequency to make budget-expense matching easier.

- use what we have learned from our first planning cycle within Apptio to make planning for the next fiscal year more seamless.

One of our most visible goals in 2017 is the successful implementation and utilization of Infrastructure Insights to enable our infrastructure teams to have a deeper insight to the utilization and consumption of infrastructure resources.  This will enable them to plan infrastructure spend based on server and storage consumption, perform what-if analysis, forecast for the future, etc.  Another goal, and maybe even more important, is to connect our existing MSPS project and program data via a SQL connection, so we can further expand the power of Apptio to our PMO by providing real-time views into Program and Project spend.  This will further increase adoption to an even broader audience, and move closer to using Apptio as the one-stop-shop for IT reporting.
