Welcome to the inaugural posting of the Product Potpourri series from the Apptio Instructors team!
If you've been in any of our Apptio classes you know that our instructors try to answer all of our student's questions during class. There are always a few that we just can't get to so we make sure to follow up afterwards. This has resulted in a great list of questions from students, possibly just like yourself, that we'd like to share. So... drum roll, please!... Let's kick off Episode 1!
- Are Formulas case sensitive?
- Yes, formulas in Apptio are case sensitive. For instance, you may have both the column Account and account in your data. Account representing totals and account representing subtotals. Since Apptio would need to identify both specifically we require that both the capitalization and spelling be specific. This is true throughout the Apptio applications.
- Can you change the date range in a project after it was created?
- It is possible to change the date range of a project after it was created, but it will require some Apptio assistance. If you are interested in changing your date range please contact your Apptio Customer Service Manager or Account Manager, they'll be happy to assist you.
- When you're creating the date range for your project why would someone use the closed months? Can you give us an example?
- Some Apptio clients may have projects that are only needed for certain months. A ski resort may be closed in June or July, or a water park would be closed from October through March. In these cases, they would want to exclude those dates from their projects. For a more complete walkthrough of this functionality please see this article, How To: Open and Close Time Periods.
- Why do we use Object Identifiers?
- An Object Identifier is a field, or selection of multiple fields, used in the model object's allocations to explicitly specify the columns we want to use, in order to provide the level of granularity we need. For example, you might have a column that contains a Server ID field that is unique for every row in a Servers list. For others, there will be no obvious identifier available, so one must be chosen or created. That sounds a bit intimidating, but really all it means here is "check the boxes next to the columns you want to include in your Object Identifier." If you'd like more information on this definitely join us for the Introduction to Cost Modeling class, registration can be found on the Apptio University webpage in your learning plans.
We'll be sharing more answers to questions we've received in class in future episodes of Product Potpourri so keep your eyes open for episode 2!
