Can anyone please help in providing Key Benefits of V12 upgrade? Our Exec stakeholders want to understand the benefits of doing the upgrade sooner than later. We are at 11.8.1 currently. Some of the key benefits I can think of are as follows. My understanding is that the key benefits are for TBMA's and end users do not get to see many changes and the reporting surface is the same. As it is SAAS we definitely need to be upgraded but just trying to understand better to be able to place it on our roadmap correctly.

1. Check In/ Check-out capability - Code Conflict Management

2. Better and simpler Data Management for TBMA's

3. Do we get a better Calc engine optimizing calculations??

Are there any benefits we have in V11 that we lose in V12 as well?

TBM Studio R12 - Quick Videos 

Over and above the fact that this will enable you to upgrade to all of the latest and greatest features that Apptio provides, from working with a couple of customers on upgrades, we have found the following.

• Analysing the allocation flow using the Sankey diagrams is something customers really like in terms of understanding how their costs are flowing
• Creating modelled reports is a great way to explain to specific stakeholders within your organisation how their costs are derived (e.g. a specific application manager asking how do you calculate that specific application's costs)
• Publish from Stage to Production is now effectively just a proxy switch and only takes 5 minutes. This therefore removes an entire calculation cycle
• Being able to have multiple people working within the model without stepping on each other's toes is a massive bonus 

There are more, but as I say, take a look at the videos and pick some areas that you feel will suit your organisation the most.

The best standard material are the ones the Michael linked, I'd go through those. All 3 reasons you listed are good reasons to upgrade. V12 is Apptio’s latest and best software. Here are a few reasons:
1)    The entire TBMA experience has been redesigned to simplify the process of implementing and maintaining your TBM solution.
2)    Apptio is constantly optimizing the algorithms that calculate your model. Many customers have calculation benefits from v12.
3)    Apptio’s newest applications are only available on V12. Bill of IT, for example, shipped a very large uplift earlier this year. If you are interested in any of our recently released or upcoming modules, you should upgrade to v12.
4)    Model Overview reports allow you to author reports that visualize how money flows through your model.
There are some features available on V11 that V12 does not yet support. The items affecting the largest number of Cost Transparency customer are:
1)    Export to PDF, PowerPoint, and tableau are not currently supported on V12.
2)    The Apptio Mobile application is not currently supported on V12.
3)    Certain advanced editable tables use cases are not supported in V12. TBMAs editing a table of reference data in development is still supported.

This is fab, thank you Srikanth Satakopan for asking this question - I'm sure this will be something we are asked about when we look to upgrade to v12

Just to be clear I like R12, it's got a lot of the benefits folks mentioned above but there are some drawbacks in the current version (we just upgraded from 11 to 12 a month ago). Stephen captured a few of the gaps from 11 in his note so i won't duplicate here. 

-We saw a major overall improvement in calc time (Yay)

-Significantly improved cross-application navigation

However...

-Waterfall Charts require TBM Studio access to add notes and Check-in's which will kickoff calc's so it's not really conducive to collaboration with Service/budget owners anymore (related to the Editable tables section Stephen mentioned)

-Performance issues in the TBM Studio screen have led to a lot of support calls for us since upgrading, need to refresh the screen fairly frequently and we have seen a lot of sync issues.

-Export to Excel is currently broken for non-TBMA's on a component level (whole dashboards do export)

-OOTB Component reports in R12 are not updated from the later R11 content, the Dashboards aren't exactly role/audience aligned or domain/use case aligned it's still a blend of everything without an overriding theme or taxonomy.

We're upgrading soon and I stumbled across this post (it was very helpful so thank you to all that contributed), and was wondering whether the current constraints highlighted in the image Srikanth posted are still around in the latest version? 

I love being in Studio and spend a lot of time there, so having lots of sync issues and having to refresh often is going to be a real pain, so that's one of the main problems I'd like to find out still exists/ is fixed, if anyone has any info on it, it would be greatly appreciated.

You are very welcome! We are upgrading soon as well and our Exec. Sponsors wanted to see the benefits of investing in upgrade now. That is the reason I put that question in the community and got nice feedback from both Apptians and customers.

Hi Joe Mitchell. It would be interesting to hear how your performance issues were solved during these support calls. I have similar performance issues which require refreshing multiple times after checking in few files only. I contacted Apptio support but they said they did not notice any lags or similar issues.

We were recently able to reproduce several UI performance issues on a recorded collaboration session with Apptio Support and they are addressing the issue with Engineering. Calculation or check in issues have been addressed separately post 12.3 upgrade. The feedback we got on the UI issues was that Eng was targeting a fix in Q1 next year.
