Monitoring Aruba EdgeConnect SD-WAN (Silverpeak) deployments with IBM SevOne NPM

In this post , we will cover how you can get started with monitoring your Aruba SD-WAN (formerly called Silverpeak SD-WAN) deployment using the native capabilities of SevOne. No customizations needed. You heard it right. Silverpeak SD-WAN environments are supported today and you can get up and running in minutes.

Figure 1: Aruba SD-WAN Report showing Overlays, Zones and Top Talkers with Flows chained to Metrics.

Step 1:

Adding Devices to the NMS

IBM SevOne offers a variety of options for users to onboard new EdgeConnect devices:

  • Simply use SevOne's add Device workflow and enter SNMP details for each EdgeConnect Device.
  • For bulk addition of several edge devices, use a CSV bulk import option.
  • Watch an entire subnet to continuously add new edges as they get added to the network.

Step 2:

Import Device Certification.

Reach out to IBM Support to get the latest Aruba SD-WAN Certification file by submitting a support ticket: IBM Support

Once a certification is received, you can import it to the NMS. The support ticket provides instructions on how you can get the certifications imported on the NMS.

Device certifications help you get started with monitoring any device that supports SNMP. They are a collection of Object Types that simply include several SNMP OIDs that you can monitor. Upon importing a device certification, you should see all your Aruba SD-WAN Object Types show up in the NMS.

Step 3:

Configure Flow templates (Optional, but recommended)

Aruba SD-WAN offers a wealth of information in their flow templates as documented here : Aruba SD-WAN Flow Templates.

With this information, we have the mappings of several Enterprise ID fields to names.  This helps us make sense of what each of the Flow ID fields mean in the flow packet.

We first need to send flows to the NMS/DNC in order to be able to visualize them in IBM SevOne.

Once you start sending flows from the EdgeConnect devices to your DNC, On your NMS, simply go to Administration --> Flow Configuration --> Flow Falcon View Editor

When you allow flows in the Flow Interface manager, you should see all the devices you are receiving flows from in the Flowfalcon view editor. Simply click on the wrench icon on any of the non-configured fields that have a Silver Peak Systems Enterprise ID and use the mapping sheet referenced above to configure the names for different Field IDs that Aruba exposes.

In the figure below, I show that I have configured Field ID 25 as Overlay as documented by Aruba

Figure 2: Flowfalcon View editor allows you to edit 'Not configured' Enterprise Field IDs to real usable names. These can then be used to create Flow views.

The next step here would involve creating some flow views with the newly configured Enterprise ID fields, for example, check out the figure below to see a flow view created with a mix of some standard IPFIX fields and a few Enterprise ID fields made available by Aruba.
Figure 3: Flow Falcon View editor allows you to create flow views using several different fields

Step 4:

Create Data Insight Reports.

With SevOne's robust Reporting Engine, you can create reports that can help your Network Engineering /Network Operations teams catch issues/outages faster. Below, you can see snapshots of a few reports we have created with EdgeConnect devices.

Summary:

You can get started with monitoring your Aruba SD-WAN (Silverpeak) deployments today with the native capabilities of SevOne. Just follow the steps above to get started.
