Strange behavior after reordering variables in variable view

  • 1.  Strange behavior after reordering variables in variable view

I am using SPSS 26 and often reorder variables by hand in 'Variable View'. Recently I have experienced a strange behavior after I move a variable up or down in 'Variable View' - the display in 'Data View' is messed up. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the 'Data View' does not match the 'Variable View'. In this example the glaring error is that the same variable name, 'Width_108', is repeated three times.

If I save the file and re-open the dataset the mismatch between 'Variable View' and 'Data View' disappears, and the data appear to be correctly displayed.

Any help you can give on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
      Daniel

I can't make that happen in V26 with fixpack 1.  You might install the fixpack if  you don't already have it, but I don't know that that will help.

You can reorder variables in syntax as an alternative.
    For example,
add files /file=* /keep prevexp jobcat minority id salbegin all.

Using ALL here means that any variables not mentioned earlier in the list will appear after those variables.

Thank you for this, Jon. I had installed Fixpack 1 for V26, but the problem continued. Also, thank you for the syntax suggestion. I end up moving variables around all the time, pretty much on the fly, so syntax is a little klugy for that. What I end up doing now to manage the problem is to quickly close then re-open the data file. After re-opening the data labels are back in order. Also klugy, but it does work.
