    I have IBM SPSS v29.

Is there a SPSS Smartreader version that works with SPSS v29?

I could not get SPSS Smartreader v27 to install on my computer. How can I get support to get it to work. Will v27 Smartreader work with output from SPSS v29?

Where can I get help with these issues?

I  need readers and co-authors to see large CHAID (decision tree) output.

The SmartReader is a separate, self-contained app.  It does not depend on an SPSS Statistics installation - that's the point.  What went  wrong when you tried to install SmartReader V27?  What platform do you use?

The SmartReader does not provide any functionality not already available in SPSS Statistics.  Your readers and co-authors would all need to install it.  It would probably be better to export the output from SPSS Statistics in PDF, Word, or another convenient format rather than use the SV for most purposes.

    Thanks Jon,

To install, I am using the IBM Smartreader 27 InstallShield Wizard 64bit.

I am getting Error 1311. Source file not found. Then there is a long file location that ends with the file name JRE.cab. The message asks that I "verify that the file exists and that you can access it.  Retry or cancel."

    Select Retry repeats error message

Select Cancel leads to the exit of install wizard

JRE.cab is in the Smartreader zip package.

I'm using Windows 11, 64 bit PC, 16GB RAM.  This is custom built pc.

CHAID can produce very large trees that cannot be expanded when in PDF or Word formats. My tree has three levels and 190 nodes. It is difficult to view, even in SPSS Viewer. I have about 30 categorical variables and 1.3 million cases. I'm finishing up a research article. I would like to make the .spv file available to readers (but co-authors first) who do not have SPSS, so they can see the entire tree. I wanted to test Smartreader first before I sent out the link to the IBM download page.

    thanks again for your insights

I'll have to leave this to Tech Support to pursue, but I found something odd.  I have SmartReader27 installed, and it works fine.  I also have SPSS 29 and an old SPSS27 installed.  If I hide the V27 directory, SmartReader27 doesn't run.  In fact, it disappears from the menu.  This suggests that it is looking for the JRE directory installed with V27.

As for the huge trees you are generating, I wonder whether they are even reasonably viewable in the regular Viewer due to their size.  There is an option "tree in table format" that might be useful here.  It has the tree information in tabular format.

    Hi @Hansel Burley,
I've opened an internal information request with IBM SPSS Statistics Development about the status of the "Smartreader" as a product.

Originally we hade the "SmartViewer".  This was definitely a standalone, separate, installable piece capable of reading the SPSS Output Viewer files of the time (.spo).  When we revamped the Output Viewer (*.spv) an extra "reader.exe" executable was introduced.  I really don't recall if we ever had a dedicated standalone product called "Smartreader".   In any case, the "reader.exe" (and everything it required) existed in the install path of SPSS Statistics up until IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.x.x. (where it seems to have stopped working.)

I will update this thread when I hear back from Development.

UPDATED: I have heard back from IBM SPSS Statistics Development.  They confirm, the Smartreader was removed from the product starting with IBM SPSS 29.0 and is no longer produced going forward.  Should you want to request its return in a future release, you can do so via the IBM Ideas Portal .

In the interim, SPSS Statistics has many options for exporting the contents of the Output Viewer to alternative file formats for distribution to users without SPSS Statistics installed.

Thank you David. That history and the information on OMS is helpful.

I have noticed that for odd-shaped or complex graphics, a few editors are starting to allow authors to link articles to short movies that explain the graphics. I will give that a try.
