Compare data tables in a Decision Optimization experiment in watsonx.ai and Cloud Pak for Data

When building Decision Optimization models you sometimes want to create different scenarios with different data sets, or make changes to your data and rerun your model to see the effect. Switching between scenarios is easy in a Decision Optimization experiment, but, when making changes to data values, it's helpful to see 2 data tables side-by-side to compare values.

In watsonx.ai or Cloud Pak for Data, you can compare input data tables in the Prepare data view. To compare tables, click the three dots on one table that you want to compare values for, and select Compare with. You can then select another scenario for comparison.

For example, the following image shows the same input data table (intial inventory levels) from two different scenarios with their differences highlighted. Input data values have been changed for 3 items.

You can also compare output data tables in the Explore solution view in a Decision Optimization experiment.
For example, the following image shows the solution output for the same 2 scenarios. In this case, the Show only differences toggle is used so that you can see all the differences listed together. In this model example, the impact of changing 3 initial inventories has impact on the solution decisions, not only for the countries that had different initial inventories but for other countries too, as is seen in this table comparison with 9 differences.

Another consequence of this change to the input data in this example is in the delivery decision variables. The solution gives 56 differences and as the table has 462 rows, it might be convenient to browse through the whole data set using the arrows, with or without the Show only differences toggle.

In this particular example, the objective value obtained was the same for both scenarios, but the decision values and KPIs differed. This can be seen by comparing the KPI table in a similar manner.

See another example with table sorting in the documentation: Comparing scenario tables.
