Security Bulletin: CVE-2021-4104 CVE-2021-44228 CVE-2019-17571 IBM UCR server releases before 6.2.5.2 are impacted by CVE-2021-4104 (a weaker variant of CVE-2021-44228)

Summary:

IBM UCR server releases before 6.2.5.2 are impacted by CVE-2021-4104 (a weaker variant of CVE-2021-44228). The product uses log4j 1.2 which lacks the features need to construct the most dangerous form of the exploit. It does have an exploitable weakness that requires administrative access to exploit. Releases 6.2.5.2 or greater are not vulnerable to any variant of CVE-2021-44228. CVE-2021-4104 (the weaker variant of CVE-2021-44228 that affects log4j 1.2) requires a logging configuration change to exploit. This requires administrative access to the Settings screen to gain further privilege

Vulnerability Details:

CVEID:   CVE-2021-4104
DESCRIPTION:   Apache Log4j could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by the deserialization of untrusted data when the attacker has write access to the Log4j configuration. If the deployed application is configured to use JMSAppender, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system.
CVSS Base score: 8.1

CVEID:   CVE-2019-17571
DESCRIPTION:   Apache Log4j could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by improper deserialization of untrusted data in SocketServer. By sending a specially-crafted request, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system.
CVSS Base score: 9.8

CVEID:   CVE-2021-44228
DESCRIPTION:   Apache Log4j could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by the failure to protect against attacker controlled LDAP and other JNDI related endpoints by JNDI features. By sending a specially crafted code string, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to load arbitrary Java code on the server and take complete control of the system.Note: The vulnerability is also called Log4Shell or LogJam.
CVSS Base score: 10
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/214921 for the current score.

Remediation/Fixes:

Starting in 6.2.5.2, we have fixed this issue as a side-effect of fixing another CVE (CVE-2019-17571) by removing all networked "appenders", which include removal of the "JMSAppender" that is subject to CVE-2021-4104. For previous versions of UCR, we can disable JMS appender configuration if it is enabled (By default it is not enabled).

Workarounds and Mitigations:

It is always recommended to try these steps on test/staging environment before applying to production. Ensure to take instance backup.
For versions below 6.2.5.2, we can disable JMS appender configuration if it is enabled in the configuration file log4j.properties (By default it is not enabled).
Please ensure to stop/start services accordingly.
