Optimizing IBM DevOps Code ClearCase’s Footprint Through HCL Software DevOps Services
HCL Software DevOps Services recently engaged with a global technology leader that develops industry-leading equipment and services that drive modernization throughout the electronics industry. They have employed the scalable, flexible, secure version management and IP protection solution, IBM DevOps Code ClearCase and MultiSite, to manage their software releases. This company has managed commercial applications with ClearCase that incorporate advanced process control and process-enabling expertise to enable evolution and innovation across key industries including automotive, mobile and data centers.
Challenge
Faced with multiple outdated application and operating system issues on development environments, growing and untenable operating costs, and customer obligations, HCL Software DevOps Services was brought in to help address them. We started by conducting a deep-dive discovery of the current ClearCase and MultiSite environments, including interviews with stakeholders. Discovery included a comprehensive investigation to identify any matters which could give rise to blockers to meeting customer and corporate stakeholder commitments, as well as, optimization activities, including upgrade, migration and consolidation tasks. An optimization roadmap was developed to implement solutions to resolve aforementioned challenges identified during discovery.
Solution
HCL Software DevOps Services delivered solutions to implement:
- Footprint reduction to consolidate 5 to 2 servers deployed across multiple sites
- Upgrade Oracle Solaris servers to the latest supported 11.4 release
- Upgrade consolidation target ClearCase / MultiSite servers to the 11.0 release
- Migrate 471 Versioned Object Bases (VOBs – i.e., repositories) and 27,622 work spaces, or about 12 TB of data from the 3 decommissioned servers.
Results
Minimized risk and downtime
An updated, smaller and simpler installation has substantially decreased operational risks and downtime by 60%.
Reduced administrative and operational overhead
An optimized footprint where sites, servers and network attached storage were consolidated has significantly reduced both administrative and operational costs with realized savings of 70%.

Our customer now has an operational optimized ClearCase implementation that is up to date and fully supported now and well into the future.
