IT Planning is based on a set of reference data that is organized in a particular hierarchy to support your configuration and give you control of the data you want to view.

Thanks @Lauren Griessel for that explanation. The pictures help!
Hi Derek,
You can enable what you are looking for by grouping on the column. If you are at the all departments level in the drop down (seeing everything) and you group by the cost object column you can then expand it to see what " children" cost centers roll up into it:
In addition on the dashboard you can do the same thing in the heat map charts. If you are at a parent level or at the All department level you can drill into the "children cost centers:
If I click on applications then I see what rolls up to the applications "parent":
If the above does not address your request I am more than happy to try and understand it further to see if we can get you what you are looking for.
Note: These screenshots are from my sandbox with dummy data.
Let me know,

I worked with our premier support, and got a little bit more information. I just want to confirm with you. The only purpose that the parent child relationship exists for is to populate the drop down menu when selecting data for data entry. If you wanted to be able to see data at the different hierarchy levels you would need to add additional columns to the account reference data. Just having the parent child relationship established does not create drill capabilities in the reporting.
HI Derek,
Can you give a little more explanation? I'm not quite sure I understand your question.
I would really like to understand if/how parent codes help when looking at data say in the expense view. I do not see any options of looking at the data at the different consolidated levels that you would put in the parent hierarchy.
Love this Alison! It really helps explain why we have to set up those Parent codes in ITP in a very straight forward manner.
