It also addresses issues in the Coupa, Multicloud, and Apptio Download connectors, and automatically registers the Default Agent during initial setup.
DataLink 4.8 (Build 11122): Release Notes March 28, 2019 This release introduces the engine auto upgrade feature, a new agent registration process, a Multicloud Connector enhancement to display execution history and the GA release of the Coupa connector. It also resolves several bugs and adds some interface improvements, such as support for right-clicking connectors to open in a new tab, and remembering your previous sort order. This release is not compatible with previous releases.

An alternative is to switch to the Multicloud connector, introduced in the DataLink 4.7.8 release. 
DataLink 4.7.8 (Build 10545): Release Notes  Jan. 21, 2019 This release introduces the Multicloud connector (requires Studio 12.6) to replace the AWS and Azure connectors, as well as a new vCenter connector that uses their REST API.

This release contains a minor bug fix in the ServiceNow connector and logging improvements.
DataLink 4.7.0 (Build 9757): Release Notes  Sept. 24, 2018

This release includes changes to allow the engine to communicate directly with the manager, reducing reliance on the agent and simplifying future upgrade scenarios. The release also includes bug fixes, other improvements, and security enhancements. 

 

IMPORTANT  Due to the nature of the changes, the manager, agent and engine MUST be upgraded to this version in order for DataLink to continue functioning.

This release adds support for encoding in the SOAP connector, a new OAuth2.0 grant type called client_credentials, improves error messaging for Trusted Advisor connectors, and addresses issues with deleted connectors reappearing as well as connectors stuck in "Waiting to be run" status in certain situations.

@Jessica Green, we have a goal to avoid any upgrade that leaves the on-prem agent in an invalid state. Simply put, we don't upgrade a manager that has an on-prem agent without coordinating with the TBMA. If that has happened, please contact me separately so I can hear more about what happened and take further steps to prevent it.

@Siegfried Bertl, we also have a goal of maintaining compatibility between DataLink and Studio in a way that gives you the most flexibility in timing your upgrade of either component. We learned a lesson when Studio 12.2 shipped without DataLink compatibility and I believe we've avoided that kind of issue ever since. If a future release of Studio requires a minimum version of DataLink, we will be sure to provide that information as part of the Studio upgrade messaging. And in cases where DataLink ships a feature that requires a minimum version of Studio, we strive to highlight that in our release notes, and we also make sure DataLink continues to work (without that feature enabled) on older Studio versions. Here is a recent example.

@Daniel Swainston, it would be ideal to have every customer on the latest version to take advantage of the latest security and feature improvements, but I realize, especially when an on-prem agent is involved, that a given release may not be worth the effort. This is why we do the work to ensure backward-and-forward compatibility across a number of releases. We're also working on a feature that will allow you to opt-in to automatic engine updates, which we hope will alleviate the need for that bot you mentioned.

Agree with some of the other comments, in particular, since the on-prem agent needs to run the same version as the default agent, it only makes sense to coordinate the upgrades so that the default agent continues to function uninterrupted.  As-is, the default agent is blindly accepting all upgrades leaving the on-prem agent behind or in an invalid state.

I don't believe we can use here any hint to "agility". Yes, you do very often release, but you forget your customers and that are we.....and our input is valid..!

 

Without the hint of our Premier Success Consultant, we will miss these important step to be ready for the next release in January (12.6xx) and the result is in opening ticket again to fix urgent problems because nothing works as in the last release upgrades happened.

Therefore we will appreciate if there is a note/mail to your customers (which use Datalink) with any further information about necessary upgrades.......because we don't pay for Apptio to look around for information, I expect to get agile on time informed.

What is Apptios recommendation for updating Datalink? Is it every release?
We're finding the time it takes to update the engine and agent doesn't always get the benefit unless significant security/ bugs are identified in the realease or we are really waiting for a new integration or feature to happen.

 

Are others updating at every new release? I'm curious how your teams handle this.

 

Our Process:

 

Reach out to Apptio Support to upgrade server side so we are able to download and install the latest version of the agent on-prem

 

Once we know we know we have the latest from Apptio, we start the process given here: Upgrade on-premises Windows Datalink 4 agent to latest version (Outdated, click for updated version) 

 

Depending on the upgrade, the machine may require a restart. Which could take a while if our Sys Admin is busy.

 

My dream would be to have a bot run through each of the steps above to upgrade and install.
I'd be interested if any have already done this or something to ease the process/ save time.

We believe our customers are benefiting from the agility we can demonstrate with more frequent releases of this product, and I believe other SaaS companies with modular product lines also employ this approach. Please help me understand the challenge this presents and perhaps we can come up with ways to address the issues without sacrificing our agility.

It will be very beneficial for youre customers if the release for Datalink get "packaged" in the normal Apptio releases.......it is a not normal to do this seperate......thank you
