Data, Data Everywhere, and Lots of Drops to Drink

06/09/17 09:02 AM

It is a cliche to say data is growing at an ever-expanding rate. Computer logs, device data, social data, sensor readings... It is never-ending, and it is coming faster and getting larger at an incredible rate. But how do we collect this data? How do we store it? Most importantly, how do we do something useful with this data? How do we turn data into information and then into value? In this talk we will look at a scenario that follows device data as it comes into the IBM Cloud and is initially processed, cleaned, stored and analyzed to go from raw bits to value. We will take a look under the hood at the services, such as Object Storage, and Spark, that enable this flow, examining the IBM Research technologies that enable this scenario.

Speakers:
Dr. Michael Factor is an IBM Fellow and a recognized expert on storage and systems whose current focus is cloud data. He and his team work on a daily basis with the IBM Cloud Object Storage and Watson Data Platform teams delivering technologies that expand IBM's cloud services, point the direction for the future, and integrate between services such as Spark, IBM Cloud Object Storage, and Message Hub. He and his team are continuously pushing the boundaries, inventing new ways to combine and integrate data-centric services.

Dr. Dalit Naor is a senior manager of the Cloud Platforms department in IBM Research - Haifa. Her department covers wide aspects of Cloud infrastructure and platform, including Compute, Networking, Storage and Data Services. Dalit is also a Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM), specializing on cloud data services, cloud object stores, trusted cloud services, and infrastructure for big data analytics.
