Choosing a Container Orchestrator: Docker Swarm/Datacenter vs Kubernetes

Container orchestration relates to the running of multiple containers across multiple hosts. It includes aspects such as initial container placement, scaling, health monitoring, failover, load balancing and service discovery. There are a myriad of projects claiming to offer these capabilities in this rapidly evolving space and, in this session, we’ll look in depth at two of the front-runners: the commercial Docker Datacenter offering from Docker Inc. built on the open-source Docker Swarm technology; and Kubernetes, originally from Google and now a part of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. We’ll compare their use for deployment of both existing and new cloud-native applications based on WebSphere Application Server and IBM MQ.

Speakers: David Currie is the Container Architect for WebSphere Application Server. He previously worked on the WAS Liberty Cloud Foundry/Bluemix support and has an interest in cloud native applications and microservices.

Arthur Barr is the Cloud Developer Advocate for IBM MQ. He previously worked on cloud architecture for the Bluemix Message Hub service and the Watson IoT Platform service.
