Allocating Cost and Usage Accountabilities in your Organization using Cloudability Resource Inventory

Fri June 28, 2024 05:25 AM

Cloudability’s Resource Inventory feature enables users to produce an authoritative list of cloud resources that existed and were billed during a specific reporting period. The user has the flexibility to build this list from resources spanning multiple accounts and can choose from different measures (dimensions and metrics) to surface the details relevant to them. This information - available for each cloud resource - unifies billing, utilization, and descriptive meta data to give the user a comprehensive inventory view. For more information about this feature, please read Cloudability AWS Resource Inventory and/or Azure Resource Inventory Reporting.

We have released an enhancement in Resource Inventory on 26th June 2024 that addressed the open limitation of the feature not able to honor Cloudability Views created using Business Dimension (Business Mapping). With this  release, we have also removed the privileged permission in Front Door that was tied to Resource Inventory feature (AWSResourceInventoryFullAccess) that will make this feature available for all user personas within your org, regardless of whether they've been assigned this permission or not.

How does this help?

Cost management and optimization is not a single handed responsibility. Individuals at every level and in every area of an organization have a different role to play in the FinOps practice. By defining succinct data boundaries and granting access to the relevant inventory data that each person or team is entitled to (via Cloudability's View capability), an admin will now be able to introduce a shared responsibility model for cost management and optimization within their org. This would not only help them to reduce the overheads in managing the cloud inventory by themselves, it will also help to establish clear workflows across all business units to report on their cloud inventory data. This will be a huge value add to organizations having a large number of teams using and sharing cloud resources, where lack of data allocation becomes a non starter for effective data governance.

Now that Resource Inventory supports all types of Views in Cloudability, admins just need to ensure that there are Views created using any combination supported filters (Tag Dimensions, Account Groups, Business Mapping or Vendor) that will accurately represent the data boundary for the users or teams within the organization and encourage their cloud consumer personas (engineering, devops etc.) to start monitoring and managing their resources on a regular basis.
