In this session, we share our experience from a Proof-of-Technology project in which we developed a Gradle plugin for building COBOL applications. The plugin supports both decentralized builds using GnuCOBOL and native builds on z/OS with IBM Enterprise COBOL. Our goal was to explore how mainframe development can integrate more seamlessly into modern DevOps toolchains by leveraging the rich Gradle ecosystem. This approach enables teams to benefit from Gradle’s flexibility and ongoing improvements, while only extending it with mainframe-specific logic. The session includes technical insights, design considerations, and lessons learned.
