Probably one of the most frequent questions I am asked is what microcode level should I be using for DS8000 Transparent Cloud Tiering.  As we all know, code levels will change but I thought it would be good to provide the latest information on this topic.

    As of today (04/19/2024):

TS7700 -  Microcode level 8.53.1.21 for the latest Advanced Object Store (FC5283) updates
DS8900 - Microcode level R9.4 89.40.93.0 for the latest TCT fixes including support for TS7700 FC5283
DFSMS -  z/OS V2R4 or higher plus any available apars found with FIXCAT category IBM.Function.DFSMSCloudStorage and DFSMS/K

And as Lourie mentions, code levels and recommendations do change over time so thought I'd share a link to the DS8900 code recommendation page which is updated as new DS8900 levels are released or revisions to recommended levels are identified.  Link: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/689333

Lourie, please, what code level is recommended to implement TCT today?

In the table below we do have the recommended level and latest level, I did the recommendation to my customer to install the latest, but Support Team did remember an important point, the code is quite new and do not have a long runtime.

    Code levels:

    Thanks in advance.

Denis, R5.3 PGA1 (8.53.1.21) is the right recommendation at this time.

From the Code Update Recommendation page:

Note: IBM intends to change the currently documented Minimum and Recommended Code Level for TS7760 and TS7770 from R5.1 PGA2 to R5.2 Phase 1 PGA3, and the Recommended Code Level from R5.3 GA to R5.3 PGA1 for TS7770 with 128GB in early 3Q23.

The number of systems on R5.3 PGA1 vs R5.3 GA is clearly growing nicely and the switch will happen as pre-announced in essentially a couple of weeks.
