Under 'events' it should tell you what the error is - bad tape, bad drive etc or at least give you an error code that you can call into support to get help. You will likely need to provide/download the drive and library logs and send them in as part of your case. The optimization for LTO 9 tends to painfully long - in our environment , it takes about 2 hours before the LTO 9 tape is 'optimized' before it can be INZ for use...

    Marco,

I would follow the process Rich Malloy mentions. What I have to add is additional information about the Media Optimization. There is a write-up about Media Optimization in the LTO9 SCSI Reference (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6490249). See clause 4.1 Media Optimization (LTO9+), and Annex E.3. LTO-9 Cartridge Initialization. These sections discuss the time required, as well as some application behavior changes that may be helpful.

When a new LTO-9 cartridge that has never been used before is loaded into the drive, the drive performs the Media Optimization as described in the SCSI Reference mention in the previous paragraph. The status that the drive reports to the library is "Calibrating". That calibration can take up to two hours to complete. It also may take much less time. It all depends on the difference in ambient environmental conditions compared to the media pack conditions.

I hope this additional information helps.

Thank you Kevin....but 1 hour later, I have this error "Move cartridge operation failed due to drive or cartridge issue", with TSM server, load on drive 1 it'ok, when load on drive 2, drive go in calibration and then give me this error, and with iseries has identical problem

Marco - I promise that if you open a ticket with IBM and collect the library and drive logs and send them in like I suggested, life will get a little better for you.

@Marco Pandolfo There is a feature on TS4300 that allows you to optimize a cartridge prior to use. See https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ts4300-tape-library?topic=features-new-media-optimization-wizard. If the issue you are having is related to the timing of the Media Optimization process, then optimizing a cartridge with the new-media-optimization feature and then loading the cartridge will get you past the issue. Some applications, I don't know which, require that the cartridges are optimized before being used.

Also note that though the average to optimize a cartridge is 40 minutes, it can take up to 2 hrs.
