Labeling Ultrium9 on Spectrum Protect

    Hi,

First time to use Ultrium9 with our Spectrum Protect v8.1.15. Any special task to go about it? Or do I just issue the label libvolume command?

    Thanks in advance.

    B

    Hi Bobbie

For the first time in lto, LTO9 comes with new requirement called "media initialization". You can check "LTO 9 Media Initialization" topic on  https://www.lto.org/faqs-about-lto/

    Hi,

Tape is now optimized. However, i can't label using spectrum protect. From activity log, i can see i/o error and unable to query messages.

Any idea on how to go about this?

    Hi,

I can see the cartridges with 'optimized' status in the TS4300 GUI.

Still getting the same error when labeling the volume.

ANR8311E Input/Output (i/O) error occurred during an attempt to access drive lto9drv4 (mt3.0.0.1) for operation queryappendonly the error number (errno) is 1 and the return code (rc) is 2863

    Did I miss a step?

Did you try to label a single Cartridge not a bunch of them?

    Hi,

First we tried to label a bunch of LTO8 cartridges. This failed miserably :-)

However, good news, we managed to successfully label Ultrium9 (LTO9) cartridges. First, just one cartridge, then we din batches in 10. All cartridges are now labeled and being used by SP.

    Sharing what we did.

    Background:

We upgraded a TSM Server for Windows v7.1.1 to Spectrum Protect for Windows v8.1.15 (from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2022). We carried over the existing TS3200 with LTO6 because also to need to migrate from the former to LTO9 (on TS4300).

After upgrade of SP, we did some test on backup and restore using TS3200 with LTO6. This exercise was successful. Then we defined library and drives for TS4300 with LTO9 drives. This was successful was well. Checked serial numbers and devices thru tsmdlst, everything aligned. However, upon labeling, we encountered an error message, ANR8311E An I/O error occurred during an attempt to access drive LTO9DRV5 (mt4.0.0.0) er=1 rc=2863.

Opened a case with IBM. Support was looking at OS level/driver level issue not SP.

We reviewed the drivers and I noticed something peculiar with the discovered device in Windows Device Manager. I checked with the technician who configured the OS. Apparently, he just carried over the existing IBM library and drive drivers as he was upgrading SP and the OS. Since no errors were encountered (no exclamation marks in the devices) he assumed it was OK.

So, we updated the drivers. Followed your guidance in optimizing LTO9 Cartridges (Kudos to you Sir Martin). Waited for 40 minutes for the optimization process (marked as 'calib' in TS4300 web gui) to finish.  Did the label command from SP, and true enough, successfully labeled the cartridge.

Just in case, you guys are wondering how we did the optimization, we loaded the LTO9 cartridges in the I/O port, moved the cartridge to a LTO9 drive via the TS4300 web GUI. The status of the drive changed from idle/loading to calib. After 40 mintues, became idle, then upon hovering on the LTO9 cartridge, it is 'optimized'

So that is how we labeled LTO9 cartridge using SP Server.

I hope this can provide guidance to our co-champions :-)

    Cheers
