  • 1.  How to fix IO port configuration issue on PBHA with 2 SAN FS5300

    Posted 2 days ago
Hello everyone, I have 2 FS5300 devices with version 8.7.0, installing PB-HA mechanism. I have successfully installed and connected to the CISCO SAN SWITCH wiring diagram as follows:
    - Error on two SAN FS5300:
    - SAN FS5300 01:
    - I use lstargetportfc on SAN FS5300 01.
    - SAN FS5300 02:

    - I use lstargetportfc on SAN FS5300 02.
In which the red connection wire is defined for the connection to the host, and the blue one is used to connect 2 SAN FS5300 together to create Partnerships. I perform the SAN conversion step by step so that the SAN Switch configuration in the customer's system is not interrupted, so I configure SAN SWITCH 02 first and then SAN Switch 01. For SAN SWITCH 02, everything is stable, but when performing the configuration on SAN SWITCH 01, the blue wire ports connected to SAN FS5300 do not see SCSI or NVMeFC NPIV appear. As far as I know, on the FS5300 line, when connecting 1 physical port, 2 more SCSI and NVMeFC ports are created. Now I want to fix this error to ensure the IBM system. Hope everyone can help.
    - SAN SWITCH 02:
    - SAN SWITCH 01:
I look forward to receiving everyone's help. THANKS

    Dear Tan

just to clarify. Each physical FC Port has three WWPNs. One of the is physical, one for NPIV SCSI and one for NPIV NVMe. All three WWPNs are active as the machine runs. A plugin Cable is not required to get NPIV WWPNs.

You should pay attention in the zoning environment, as i think, the Cisco SAN Switches are able to handle NPIV.

As far, as i know you should setup a "partnership" zone for private traffic. Use only physical WWPNs. For Hosttraffic use only NPIV WWPNs.

I suggest to use softzoning in stead of hardzoning via Ports on the SAN Switch. Then you are able to switch cables, ports and SFPs. Might be a faulty SFP or a SFP with the wrong wavelenght

    kind regards Martin

    Hello Martin.
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read my article. Regarding the problem of connecting 2 FS5300 devices to PH-HA, I have done it and completed it. Only the IO group error on 2 FS5300 connected to SAN SWITCH 01 according to the model above and I have tried everything to fix the error but it is not promising. Is there any possibility that FS5300 blocks NPIV SCSI port when connecting to SAN SWITCH 01? I hope you can help.
    - This is the image of the Zone I created to connect on SAN SWITCH 02:

SAN-F5300-01-A4 represents the physical port and SAN-F5300-01-A4_npiv_01 is the nvme port.

Looking forward to your support. Thanks

And one additional point : did you setup a cluster with both FS5300? Then you can use Hyperswap. For a PB-HA environment both machines have to be setup as stndalone machines.

Just to confirm - PBHA is run between two different systems, not as a single clustered system as Martin has stated above.

You need to remove IO Group 1, create it as it's own system and then configure PBHA.

For your specific port issue,  please make sure you are following the advice/guidance from:
    The redbook
    How to video
    IBM Documentation

If you are still seeing port failures and the directed maintenance procedure is not giving you clarity, please reach out to support.

    Hi Evelyn Perez,

Thank you for your interest in my article, I think you are confusing the problem I want to be solved not about PB-HA, but the problem about:
    Error: IO port configuration issue
    Event ID: 088000
Event ID Text: SCSI or NVMeFC NPIV host port failed to login to fabric and how to fix this error I hope you can guide me to fix this error,
    I sincerely thank you.
