How to replace tapes that have read-write errors?

The TSM backups go to primary storage (disk) from there it is put on tapes. There are database backups going to tapes also. There is no copy pool. I was given the task to replace all of the tapes in the tape library. The tapes have been in there for a very long time. There are no empty slots in the tape library. What would be a good strategy to replace the tapes even if I have to do it one or 2 at a time. I think there is about 43 slots.

If you have a lot of scratch tapes, the easiest is this:

    - Set the tape pool to read only

    - Replace scratch tapes with new tapes

    - Create a new tape pool and set this as nextstg for the old tape pool

    - Migrate data

If it is just a few scratch tapes, you can move volumes one by one in the same pool:

    - Set the old volumes with data to read only

    - Use the move data <volname> command which will allocate a new available scratch tape
