    Posted Thu January 06, 2022 06:30 AM

Can any one advise on this:

Does IBM support Direct Attached connectivity  with storage between 2x power servers with 4 vios each using dual port FCS i.e.

    1. Total no of VIOs 4 of POWER9
    2. Total no of IBM 16G FC adapter 4
    3. Total no of PORTS are 8
    4. VIOS v 3.1.3
    5. OS will be SUSE 15 SP5
    6. Storage is IBM V5010

An early help will be appreciated.

    Hello Khurram,

according to SSIC this combination basically seems to be supported, had checked this for FS5015 though.
Note that with direct attachment the hosts cannot benefit from the storage-side NPIV for smooth node failover.

    Dear  Christian,

Thanks for the reply, my another question is if we can use NPIV with this storage or revert back to old method of using VIOS VSCSI methodology?

    Hello Khurram,

The NPIV remark is on storage side, not P-Series.

No action required here, you can leave NPIV enabled, but there will be no added value of NPIV feature on storage :

The advantage of having NPIV enabled on storage will only be visible when everything is connected via SAN switches.

On P-Series (VIOS) you can do NPIV mapping as usual.

    Kind regards,

V5010 has a limit of 8 fiber connections, each controller has 4 fiber ports.
If the total number of ports on P9 is 8 or lower, you should be OK to use direct attached.

I do not recommend using it even if it is supported and cheaper at first glance.
    it only has disadvantages

finding fc errors or other crc fc problems is much more complicated than having a switch with real fabric

migrating to a new storage later is much more complex

Customers who used it later migrated to a fabric, so I always recommend doing it right the first time.
we have had a lot of problems with the 16/32g finisar optics in recent years.
the trancivers never really break down they produce the greatest effects, c3 discards, link loss, crc, login issues....

and in this situations is a switch a very good tool, port fancing, maps alerts .......
