Effortless MS Windows Recovery : Scripts are now part of the IBM Storage Protect BA Client Package

A successful "bare-metal" restore of your Microsoft Windows operating systems begins with a successful backup. IBM Storage Protect Backup-Archive Client uses Windows VSS to back up the Windows system state and file systems. For doing a full system recovery, the recommended approach is to boot into Windows Preinstallation Environment ("WinPE") and then use the backup-archive command line client to restore system state and local drives.

Historically, creating the WinPE boot media with embedded client, and using the WinPE boot media to recover a system, were complex and error-prone procedures. This was made easy with below automated scripts which were downloaded separately:

build_recovery_image.cmd: A script that fully automates the process of creating the WinPE boot media with embedded backup-archive client
build_recovery_image_dismexit.cmd: A companion script to "build_recovery_image.cmd" that allows custom driver injection into the WinPE boot media
restore_system.cmd: A script that runs when WinPE boots to guide the user through the restore process and automate as much of the process as possible.

Starting with 8.1.25 release, the WinPE recovery scripts are now included as part of the BA Client package. This integration eliminates the need for a separate download, reducing complexity and improving accessibility for administrators. By streamlining the process, users can more easily set up WinPE environments, ensuring quicker recovery and better protection for their critical data. This enhancement reflects IBM’s commitment to delivering seamless and user-friendly solutions for your backup and recovery needs. So far the scripts have had good success in the field, and they avoid a lot of the pitfalls of the complex multi-step manual procedures.
