Management of vVol Datastore using vCenter
The IBM FlashSystem family of storage arrays natively supports vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVol) that allows you to efficiently manage your vVols datastores directly within the vCenter. This ensures smooth and effective operations in your virtual environment.
This guide talks about various datastore operations that includes:
- Create a New vVol Datastore
- Rename the Existing vVol Datastore
- Mount the vVol Datastore
- Unmount the vVol Datastore
To perform these operations, you need to enable vVol configuration on IBM FlashSystem and integrate the VASA provider with the vCenter.
For more information, please refer to our previous blog here.
A. Create a New vVol Datastore:
1. In the vSphere Client object navigator, browse to a host, a cluster, or a datacenter. From the right-click menu, select Storage > New Datastore.
2. Select vVol as datastore type and click Next.
3. Enter a unique name for datastore which is not present in vSphere Inventory.
4. Select the storage container from the list of Backing Storage Container table.
5. Verify the Backing Storage Container Details of the selected container that are displayed at the bottom of the table and click Next.
6. Review the whole configuration summary and click Finish.
7. Check the Recent Task tab to monitor the progress.
8. Once the task is complete, the new datastore appears in the storage section of the vSphere inventory.
B. Rename the Existing vVol Datastore
1. Right-click on the datastore that needs to be renamed and select Rename option from drop down menu.
2. Enter the new name which is unique and not present in the vSphere Inventory.
3. Click on OK to finish the operation.
C. Mount the vVol Datastore on Additional Hosts:
1. Right-click on the datastore that you need to mount on the additional ESXi.
2. Select Mount Datastore/Mount Datastore on Additional Hosts option from drop down.
3. Select the compatible host where want to mount the datastore and click on Next.
4. Review the selection and click on Finish.
D. Unmount the vVol Datastore:
1. Right-click on the datastore you want to unmount.
2. Select Unmount Datastore option from drop down.
3. Select the ESXi host from where you want to unmount the datastore and click OK.
That is all for the various operations involved in managing the vVol datastores from vCenter.
