The mission of this IBM Community group is to provide a place for customers, IBM professionals and IBM business partners to collaborate and transfer knowledge about the DS8000 Transparent Cloud Tiering solution including topics involving IBM System Z DFSMS, DS8000, and TS7700 object store.

DS8000 Transparent Cloud Tiering (TCT) is an IBM Z solution that moves DFSMShsm and DFSMSdss mainframe primary storage data directly from DS8000 to a cloud storage device.  That cloud storage device could a supported traditional S3 system or an IBM TS7700 Virtualization Engine as part of their TS7700 Advanced Object Store feature.

Moving data from primary disk storage to the cloud has many benefits.  The main benefit is in host CPU savings.  With transparent cloud Tiering, DFSMS no longer has to read or write data through the mainframe to handle backup and archival workloads.  This provides a significant reduction in resource utilization on the mainframe.  Other benefits include no more recycles, block size limitations, tape size limitations and serial access to data.
