Managing the Ceph NVMe-oF Gateway through the intuitive Dashboard UI

By Krishna Ramaswamy posted Wed January 08, 2025 11:26 PM

The Ceph Dashboard offers a streamlined interface for configuring and managing NVMe-oF gateways and related services. Here's an overview of the key functionalities.

Managing NVMe-oF Services

The Ceph Dashboard enables the creation, configuration, and deletion of NVMe-oF services and their associated gateways:

  1. Services:

    • Set up NVMe-oF gateways and gateway groups.

    • Enable mutual TLS (mTLS) for secure communication.

  2. Best Practices:

    • Ensure proper authentication and encryption for secure access.

    • Configure resource limits based on workload requirements.

Accessing NVMe-oF Management

  1. Navigation:

    • Go to Block > NVMe/TCP in the Ceph Dashboard.

  2. Tabs Overview:

    • Subsystems Tab: Configure NVMe-oF subsystems, listeners, namespaces, and initiators.

    • Gateways Tab: Manage gateway configurations and monitor statuses.

Subsystems Management

The Subsystems Tab allows comprehensive management of subsystems and their components:

  1. Main Table:

    • Displays basic subsystem information, such as:

      • Subsystem NQN: Unique identifier for each subsystem.

      • Number of Namespaces: Total namespaces configured.

      • Max Allowed Namespaces: Capacity for additional namespaces.

  2. Subsystem Details:

    • Expand a specific subsystem to access tabs for:

      • Details: View and edit subsystem configurations.

      • Listeners: Manage listeners and their IP/port settings.

      • Namespaces: Add, edit, or delete namespaces.

      • Initiators: Add or remove initiator NQNs for subsystem masking.

  3. Management Actions:

    • View: Inspect subsystem configurations and performance.

    • Create: Define new subsystems with specific parameters.

    • Modify: Adjust existing subsystem settings, such as listeners or namespaces.

    • Delete: Remove subsystems when no longer needed.

Gateways Management

The Gateways Tab provides a high-level overview of NVMe-oF gateways and their groups:

  1. Information Displayed:

    • Gateway ID: Unique identifier for the gateway.

    • Hostname: Server name where the gateway runs.

    • Status: Active or inactive state of the gateway.

  2. Gateway Group Management:

    • View gateway group details by selecting from the Selected Gateway Group list.

    • Manage gateway configurations, including group-level settings.

Business Benefits

  1. Simplified Operations: A centralized dashboard to manage NVMe-oF services reduces complexity.
  2. Enhanced Scalability: Easy creation and management of subsystems and namespaces enable seamless scaling.
  3. Improved Security: Features like mTLS and initiator masking enhance data protection.
