Feel the heat!

Make no mistake this release of IBM® Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center V5.2.4 is hot and new and contains many user enhancements. The modeling of storage data with applications and departments, which enables you to perform capacity trending, health monitoring, and performance troubleshooting tasks and more powerful, intuitive alerting capabilities are just some of the new release highlights. For even  information on what’s new in Tivoli Storage Productivity Center V5.2.4, see this what's new link.

Application and department modeling

In Tivoli Storage Productivity Center V5.2.4, you can create application and department models of your storage that will grow with your business organization. You can monitor the storage capacity, recognize trends, and monitor health status at the application and department levels. You can gain insights into the SAN resources that your applications depend on in order to troubleshoot performance in your business hierarchy.

The following figure shows the new application Overview page, which includes a list of related components and SAN resources, as well as capacity trending and performance charts for the monitored application:

Tivoli Storage Productivity Center offers a dynamic way to add resources to applications and enhance capacity and performance reporting information. By creating filters for applications, the resources that match the filter criteria are added automatically to the application or a subcomponent (a member application). The use of wildcard characters enables you to customize and expand your search to add even more resources. As new resources are added to the system and they match the filter, they automatically become part of the application.

The following figure shows the new Create Filter page and the three types of filters that you can use to populate the application with resources:

You can create departments and monitor the storage capacity that is used by the departments in your business environment. You can structure departments hierarchically to mirror your business structure. By adding departments to the hierarchy, you can regulate and compare what departments have the most capacity usage and track the trending of the storage that is used by specific departments.

The following figure shows the new department Overview page, which includes a list of related components and SAN resources, as well as capacity trending and performance charts for the monitored department:

Alert configuration

Tivoli Storage Productivity Center V5.2.4 enables you to define alerts for configuration changes and performance problems on your monitored resources. You can determine when and how you are alerted to configuration changes or performance problems on monitored resources.

You can view and edit the alert definitions for each resource in one, central location. For example, you can right-click a storage system and define a condition that triggers an alert when that storage system goes offline, and define a threshold that triggers an alert when the total I/O rate of its components exceeds 300 operations per second.

You can also define how you are notified about each alert, or set a global notification setting for all of the alert definitions that are associated with a resource.

Alert migration

You might have configured some alerts in a previous release of Tivoli Storage Productivity Center and you’re wondering if those alert definitions will be available when you upgrade? Don’t worry!  This release provides a seamless migration of those alerts. If you are upgrading from a previous release, any of the alerts you configured prior to the upgrade will automatically be migrated over without any user intervention.

GPFS support

More support was added for General Parallel File System (GPFS™ ) and a few user interface improvements were made as well.

For example, GPFS snapshots were added for file systems and filesets in internal resources. You can see the Name, Size, Creation Time and links to the related File Systems and Filesets.

This is some of the new information for GPFS support:

•    GPFS snapshots for file systems and filesets
•    GPFS node correlation
•    Status updates for GPFS Nodes and NSDs
•    File system Inode overview charts
•    Periodical status polls between regular GPFS probes
•    Capacity bars for file storage properties and a reworked file storage pyramid
