More Energy Efficiency in Store

By Audrey O'Donnell posted Fri June 16, 2023 07:43 AM

Energy costs and data needs seem to both be growing at exponential rates. There are also increasing climate regulations and environmental goals for corporations to achieve with their procured infrastructure. Given this, there has never been a more critical time for IT leaders to invest in data storage devices that are sustainable than now.

IBM is committed to building a more sustainable future, so designing for energy efficiency and the environment is one of our core principles. IBM was just named one of the top 100 Net Zero Leaders by Forbes as a corporation that is paving the way towards turning our sustainability ambition into action1. This leadership is offered to our clients as well through our innovative, energy-efficient storage designs. Now, IBM is the first primary storage vendor to guarantee our energy efficiency for client-owned flash devices.

Sustainability, Experienced

“Our energy consumption dropped by 94 percent when we moved to IBM FlashSystem” explains Xavier Pioche, the IT infrastructure department manager at Orange Caraïbe.  This type of potential can be unlocked for many corporations due to their investment in less dense devices and experience with infrastructure sprawl. Orange Caraïbe found itself desiring to modernize and expand their business by bringing their award-winning quality of service to new lines of business beyond telecommunications. To do that, they needed to more than double their storage capacity while decreasing their power costs. After implementing IBM FlashSystem devices, Orange Caraïbe saw “processing times fall by 30 percent,” which “translates into more responsive service to customers in [their] stores.”

Sustainability, Designed

How can corporations know which storage vendor to trust when every vendor claims to be the most energy efficient? At a core, this assurance comes from innovation designed from the ground up. Yet almost every data storage vendor doesn’t have this level of control when designing their devices because they only use industry-standard hardware drives.

IBM Storage FlashSystem devices have innovation from the drives all the way to the software by designing our own FlashCore Module drives. This allows us to achieve differentiated efficiency with our computational storage design. Our FlashCore Modules leverage embedded computational power to perform some data manipulation where the data is stored instead of moving the data and overloading the GPU, which offers ground-breaking efficiency.

Sustainability, Guaranteed

This level of control in design allows us to innovate and be differentiated in solving client’s toughest challenges, such as lowering energy costs and carbon footprints. To endorse our belief in the differentiated innovation that the FlashSystem devices offer, we are the first primary storage vendor to guarantee to help with client’s sustainability on client-owned devices. With our FlashCore Module drives on select FlashSystem devices, we now guarantee energy efficiency with a maximum W/TB that our running devices will not exceed across all configurations, as low as 1.7 W/TB.
