  • 1.  Push iOS Update Does not auto install

    Posted Mon August 12, 2024 02:36 PM

I am trying to push iOS updates to some of our devices.

When I push the update out, it downloads fine, then a pop-up on the device appears saying an update has been scheduled...click to install now or the update will be installed automatically in an hour.

The problem is, it never does install automatically.

Now, this has worked on two devices who were in the same security policy as the others, and all which have a passcode required setting.

Can anyone else attest to the behavior they are seeing when trying to push iOS updates and force install at a date/time? Thanks.

    Hi Lisa

Thanks for your question! We need people like you keeping our Community alive.

In actual fact the behaviour of the installation is down to the way the device was enrolled into MaaS360 (and therefore the way it is controlled).

If you have used Apple DEP (Device Enrollment Program), or Apple Configurator, you can ensure the device is enrolled in Supervised mode and then the install will be 'silent' meaning no prompt to user, no permissions required.

However if you enroll in Standard mode the prompt will come to the user as the permissions are required.

If you're not sure which has been used you can see this in the main page of the device in the portal: in the Summary page, in the first section, you have a field 'Container Type' which will indicate the way the device was enrolled - and therefore the behaviour to be expected.

If you want more information about DEP which is very useful to automate enrollment and enable Supervised mode, please let me know.

    Best

    Hi Eamonn,

They are definitely in DEP mode. The push worked on two devices, but is failing on the others. It downloads fine, and the warning pops up that the update will be installed within the hour, but it never actually installs. I do have a case open with support, but they are telling me it was because I have a policy that requires a passcode. This makes no sense because it worked on two of the iPads. So I was hoping someone out there could confirm this should work. Thanks.

    Hi Lisa

I apologise as I had understood your problem to be related to app updates, whereas now I see it is to do with iOS updates.

I had a look at your account. Initially it sounded like a connection issue at time of update.

I see for the device you reported that the mobile data usage had reached threshold for month of July. However your compliance rules have not got any change policy/wipe actions so you are only notifying devices but not switching data usage off.

I think what we would need to do now is to push forward with the Support investigation to see what we can find. Support will ask you for log files which you should provide if possible - there is no clear root cause for now.

    Best regards

Thanks. These are on wi-fi, so that should not be an issue.

We only notify users of their data use. We do not take action.
