  • 1.  Changing ActiveSync hostname/URL - what is the user experience?

Hi all - I have a need to change the "Hostname of the Server" in Activesync on both Android & iOS. Both are fully managed enrolled without AE & DEP.

This will also need to happen on activated devices too.

My question is, what happens at the users end. Does it just change the server host name and continue as normal, or will the policy push down a whole new ActiveSync configuration and essentially perform a 1st time sync again?

    Thanks!

Hi Matt - can you give me brief insight as to why the hostname is changing (migrations to new mail servers, perhaps)?  Is any user information also changing such as email address and/or domain?  Are you pushing mail to the MaaS360 secure mail client or to the Apple Mail/Gmail clients?

Hi Matt thanks for the quick response. You are spot on, we are upgrading Exchange and to migrate as painless as possible we'll be using a new hostname. Domain remains the same.

In terms of mail, yes to both of your questions and indeed our Samsung native email app estate too.

    Hope that helps!

I can't speak to every mail client that's out there - so you may want to do some testing.   What I can tell you is that the user will receive a prompt to enter their password in every app as changing the hostname essentially pushes the payload all over again.  Activesync takes care of most of the work, so anything they have synced should remain.

The trouble might be with local documents stored in 3rd party mail clients (such as downloaded attachments).  While MaaS360 has areas for the user to store them in our app, I can't speak to the behavior of every other mail app on the device, so there is a slight risk of some data loss.

If you'd like, you can send me an email and I can assist you in formulating a game plan for communication to your end users before the change is made.

Hi Matt - that's very kind of you to offer! I believe I have a route forward with this, at the very least I'm more comfortable with a test scenario and policies only applying to certain groups so I can create a group to apply the change of policy too and watch to see what happens from a users perspective.

Should I need more help, I'll be back in touch. Very much appreciated however.
