Behind the Shield Episode 10: Shamoon Ten Years Later - What we've learned (and what we haven't)

Author’s note: This post was built off an original post written by Chris Kubecka. Chris Kubecka is the distinguished chair of MEI’s Cyber Security and Emerging Technology Program and the founder and CEO of Hypasec.

On Aug. 15, 2012, Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, was hit by one of the worst cyberattacks the world has ever seen. Nation state backed actors, under the guise of a hacktivist group calling itself the Cutting Sword of Justice, used a wiper virus known as Shamoon rigged with a logic bomb to attack the company. The result was a devastating wiping of data across 85% of Saudi Aramco’s Microsoft-based technology, affecting tens of thousands of workstations.

The impact of the attack was swift and destructive, causing oil markets to shudder and hard drive and memory prices to spike, imposing costs on consumers and companies worldwide. It took months for the oil giant’s computer network to return to pre-attack levels of operation. As this case vividly illustrates, the effects of cyberattacks can be far wider reaching than is often thought, extending well beyond a single company or even one country.

Fast forward a decade: The frequency and severity of cyberattacks have increased, while tech policy in most of the Western world remains in its infancy. Organizations still struggle with basic security hygiene and many—especially in the critical infrastructure sector and despite mandates to move toward zero trust by governments—remain vulnerable both in terms of ability to defend against an attack let alone respond if one should occur.

Cyber guru Chris Kubecka joins cohosts Nick Bradley and Mitch Mayne to do a retrospective on Shamoon including what happened and why. She’ll also help us understand what’s improved in the decade since, where we need to get better and how we can achieve that.

The show will air on Wednesday, August 31 at 11 am ET U.S. There will also be a live QA session concurrent with the show where you can ask questions of our hosts. Join us for a lively show and livelier conversation.
