IBM MaaS360 Empowers Admins to Control Apple Intelligence features

By Dhanasekar Varadarajan posted 23 days ago

Apple IntelligenceTM, introduced as part of Apple's broader AI initiative, was designed to enhance user experiences by leveraging artificial intelligence across various apps and services. Launched on all iOS 18 devices, Apple IntelligenceTM includes features like:

1.        Genmoji - A feature that allows users to create AI-generated emojis or characters based on user preferences and input.

2.        Image Playground - An interactive tool that lets users experiment with AI-powered image enhancements and creative effects, making it easy to edit and manipulate photos.

3.        Image Wand - A tool designed to apply intelligent, AI-driven edits to images, such as retouching, filters, and automatic corrections.

4.        iPhone Mirroring - A feature that allows users to mirror their iPhone screen to another device, such as a computer or TV, enabling seamless presentations and collaborations.

5.        Personalized Handwriting Results - An AI-based tool that personalizes handwriting recognition based on user input, improving accuracy and speed when converting handwritten notes into text.

6.        Video Conferencing Remote Control - A feature that lets users control video conferencing settings and presentations remotely, enhancing collaboration and interaction during virtual meetings.

7.        Writing Tools - can proofread your text, rewrite different versions until the tone and wording are just right, and summarize selected text with a tap.

These AI features can facilitate Apple IntelligenceTM personalization and seamless interactions with Apple devices (iPhone, iPad and Mac).

Apple Intelligence is designed to protect your privacy at every step. It’s integrated into the core of your iPhone, iPad, and Mac through on-device processing. So it’s aware of your personal information without collecting your personal information. And with groundbreaking Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can draw on larger server-based models, running on Apple silicon, to handle more complex requests for you while protecting your privacy.

However, as AI technologies have advanced, businesses have raised concerns over privacy, data security, and control, especially when these features are deployed on corporate devices. This has created a need for better management options for IT administrators, particularly in enterprise environments where internal policies often restrict the use of AI.

Apple has introduced a significant development for IT administrators, granting them the ability to switch off certain Apple IntelligenceTM features. This change is crucial for businesses seeking more control over the usage of AI-driven tools on their devices. These restrictions are particularly important for businesses that prioritize data security and need to promote compliance with internal policies.

IBM MaaS360 stays on track with new iOS 18 update

MaaS360 supports a wide range of devices across multiple operating systems, providing comprehensive coverage for diverse user needs. It is compatible with smartphones and tablets, providing full mobile device management capabilities.

With this update on iOS 18 devices, IBM MaaS360 is allowing IT admins to manage and restrict the new AI features directly from its native console. By using MaaS360, admins can disable or allow specific tools based on company policy so that employees have the necessary functionality while administrators maintain full control over device security.

The tools, mentioned in the documentation, are now possible to adjust within MaaS360:

  • allowGenmoji.
  • allowImagePlayground.
  • allowImageWand.
  • allowiPhoneMirroring.
  • allowPersonalizedHandwritingResults.
  • allowVideoConferencingRemoteControl.
  • allowWritingTools.
  • allowCallRecording.
  • allowAppsToBeLocked.
  • allowAppsToBeHidden.
  • allowMailSummary.
  • allowRCSMessaging.

Conclusion:

AI tools are the future and are being integrating into mobile devices to enhance productivity and personalization, while they can also raise security concerns for businesses, especially for mobile devices used in corporate settings.

While many businesses remain cautious about the use of AI on mobile devices due to privacy concerns, the ability to restrict and manage these tools provides an additional layer of protection. This flexibility ensures that businesses can adopt AI solutions while adhering to their security policies.
