 SPSS Version Recommendation for macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hello,

I am a master’s student and plan to purchase IBM SPSS Statistics GradPack for my thesis research.

My computer specifications are:

  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012)
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13.6
  • Intel Core i5 processor

I noticed that recent SPSS versions (31/32) do not appear to support my operating system.

Could you please advise:

  1. Which SPSS version would be the most stable and compatible with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6? Would you recommend SPSS 28, SPSS 29, or an older version? I reviewed the system requirements for different versions but I am still unsure which version would be the best choice.
  2. Are trial versions available for older SPSS releases, or only for the latest version? Is the trial version compatible with my system?

Hi.

Unfortunately, the latest version of SPSS that support High Sierra 10.13.6 is IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.1.
And also, unfortunately, the Trial version of SPSS always come with the latest version that now is IBM SPSS Statistics 32.0.0, that is not compatible with MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6, but:
IBM SPSS Statistics 31 can be installed on macOS High Sierra (10.13.6). The software officially supports 64-bit client architectures on macOS 10.13 through macOS 15.
Important Pre-Installation Requirements:
Java JRE: You must have Java JRE installed on your Mac before running the SPSS silent installer.
Hardware: Your Mac must have at least a 1.6 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended), and 4 GB of available disk space.
Authorization: Have your IBM authorization code or valid IBMid ready to activate your product using the Launch License Wizard immediately after installing

The IBM Product Compatibility Report is the final authority on what combinations of IBM SPSS Statistics and operating systems are supported.  That said, this does not mean that your preferred combination will not work. It only means that the listed OS and SPSS Statistics Version was tested by our Quality Assurance prior to releasing that version.

I would say that IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.1.1 is your best bet for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.0.0, 29.0.1.0, and 29.0.1.1 were all superceded by version 29.0.2.0 -- and that version is not supported on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra).  It is always my practice to recommend only the latest release of each version.  So for you that would mean versions 27.0.1.0 and 28.0.1.1.

All of that having been said,  I personally have a Mid 2012 MacBook Air 13",  macOS 10.15.8 (Catalina), 1.8 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 running IBM SPSS Statistics 31.0.2.0 (126).  Installing it took no extra steps.  Simply login as an Administrator, run the installer package, and license with your IBMid or traditional on-prem license authorization code.

All of this will require an IBMid.  I suggest:

  1. Go to the IBM SPSS Statistics Product Page Click the "Start Free Trial" button and sign up for the Trial.
  2. Download IBM SPSS Statistics 31.0.2.0 from the link above and install it.
  3. Wait to receive the e-mail notification telling you your Trial has begun.
  4. Launch Statistics 31.0.2.0 and log in with your IBMid.

As they say, "Your mileage may vary".
