I have been using IBM SPSS version 29 to analyze data for an ongoing project. I had noticed the software was slow to start up for about a month, and frequently crashed when trying to manipulate charts. However, while annoying, this was not directly impeding my progress and so I worked around it.

However, this morning when trying to generate outputs of a linear mixed model organized by a specific variable (i.e., split file), the program repeatedly crashed, saying, "An unknown error has terminated communication with the processor. The SPSS Statistics Processor is unavailable. Please restart the application to recover this session."

So far, I have tried restarting the software, restarting the computer, turning off unicode mode, and attempting the analysis with an earlier version of the data file. None of these solutions worked. Please advise as to how I can remedy this issue and continue my analyses.

I apologize if this is a repeated post. I could not verify that my question posted earlier.

Hi @Charles Hodgman,
I see that you are already working with IBM SPSS Statistics Support (TS019601317).
Suggestions:

  • I would suggest upgrading to version 29.0.2.0 (if not 31.0.0.0) to ensure no already identified issues with Linear Mixed Models.
  • The error message might be due to running out of resources (memory, temp space, etc).
  • You are using SPLIT FILE to run the analysis through independent slices of the data.  Do the same analyses complete if using command syntax to iteratively FILTER and run the analysis repeatedly/separately?  Is there a specific 'slice' that the analysis is failing on?
