New Alerting to Users of Failed Background Activities

We just upgraded to 12.0.4 FP1 and finally have the ability to be alerted when a background task/report fails.  Yay.  Problem is it sends users a link to their report and runs it interactively.  Has anyone found an advanced setting to change this?  I'd love the link to take them to this report in Team Content only.

TIA.

Hi Amy

I have yet to try this new functionality but for years I've been running an agent against the audit DB every 15 minutes to issue an email to users if their reports fail.  It provides the error message and report location and suggested actions. This might be worth considering for you.  The only issue since moving to the cloud is the lack of access to email addresses so I've had to build some lookups..

Thanks for your reply, Bobby, but I'm looking to use the new functionality, but not how it is out of the box.  I'm hoping there are some advance settings somewhere I can use to turn off the running of the report.

Amy - Is the report set to run as interactive and can that be changed on the report?  OR does the report need to have interactivity set to true and you just don't want that option on link when sent as a background task?    Does that even make sense?  It does in my head... but sometimes doesn't when put on paper (or the screen). :)

I ask because we can globally change the reports to disable "Run as Interactive"

But maybe that would disable the report from being sent at all.  Who knows

Hi Daryl,

I tried both interactive and non-interactive and it didn't make a difference.

@GREG MCDONALD We have been eagerly awaiting this feature and are very interested in any options available as we stand up 12.1, if you can share documentation.

@GREG MCDONALD After further review, it looks like it's trying to open the Run history but the URL is incorrect.  This is the URL it tries to access:

https://xxxxx/ibmcognos/bi?perspective=runDetails&eventID=F6BD6D17B70CAD5901995DDD4C4182AC00199de21bae2&name=Date%20Prompt

but this is the correct URL

https://xxxxibmcognos/bi/?perspective=runDetails&id=i091DB3DEDFE54FE285B9BC20F650E7DF&name=Date%20Prompt

Hi Amy, I am very much interested in this functionality and want to try it. Do you have any IBM documentation on how to enable it which you can share with me? AI shows enabling a check box under Batch report services but I am not seeing this option for us (we have on-prem server setup though).

, this setting is in Manage/Customization/Profile/Background run settings.  Click Edit and scroll down and click Notify on Error.  The user who runs the failed report will get an email, but as my post alludes to, the link is incorrect.  Hoping IBM will fix this.

@Bobby Davison  I would love to see your solution.  I've been needing to do this type of failure notification for a while - we're still on 11.2.4 and seeing the endless stream of issues with 12.0 and 12.1, we're probably going to sit on 11.2 for a while yet.  Trying to use the Audit package we struggle to filter out failures where the user is running the report interactively.  Our devs don't want to get constant emails of failures while they're working on a report.  ONLY scheduled report failures.

You can PM me if you don't want to post it all here.

Thanks!

Wayne

@Wayne Westlake Here are the details of the Report Failure Agent that I have been running.
We are running on Cloud so don't have access to the content store which means I cant access user details directly and have to use a case statement...

Hello everyone, we upgraded an environment to 12.1.1 and I wanted to share how IBM has updated this feature. The body of the email notification has only the name of the report. The link to re-run the report has been removed.

The subject line is the same: "There was a problem in executing the task, please try again. If the problem persists, please contact the system administrator."

For a future enhancement, the message needs more context to be user friendly. It would be helpful to include the report path, failure message, and the name of the application Cognos Analytics. In our organization, the system admin would not be the person to help users troubleshoot failures.
