Hello,
We are currently reviewing an application that is running on the following Java environments:
Device 1
IBM Java 8 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition
Version: 1.8.0_461
IBM build: 1.8.0_461-b11
Mac OS X x64 (SR8 FP50)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.461-b11, mixed mode)
Device 2
IBM Java 8 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition
Version: 1.8.0_451
IBM build: 1.8.0_451-b10
Mac OS X x64 (SR8 FP45)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.451-b10, mixed mode)
We would like official clarification from IBM on the following:
-
Does using these IBM Java 8 Runtime Environment builds require the purchase of any separate commercial or enterprise license for runtime use in an enterprise application?
-
If no license is required, could an IBM representative please confirm that explicitly?
-
If a license is required, what exact license/product would apply?
-
Is there a supported OpenJDK-based alternative that could be used instead for this application, in order to avoid any enterprise licensing concerns?
-
If yes, are there any IBM-recommended migration considerations or compatibility concerns when moving from these IBM Java 8 builds to OpenJDK?
We are trying to determine whether we can continue using the current runtime as-is, or whether we should plan a move to an OpenJDK distribution.
An official response from an IBM representative would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
