Hello

I have been researching options for building a home lab to improve my CICS and z/OS systems programming skills. While I am aware of the cloud-based IBM Z trial environments, I am particularly interested in a self-hosted solution using a Dell PowerEdge R730 or R750.

Has anyone successfully built a practical single-user environment for learning, testing, and troubleshooting CICS? My primary interest is gaining additional hands-on experience with CICS administration, problem determination, and the surrounding operating environment in an isolated sandbox environment rather than application development.

I am particularly interested in practicing tasks such as region startups, shutdowns, and failure recovery, SIT tuning, CPSM administration, dump analysis, TCP/IP and IPIC connectivity, CICS-MQ integration, and other common  troubleshooting scenarios without impacting users or workloads.

I would appreciate any recommendations regarding:

  • IBM zD&T and ADCD
  • CICS TS Developer Trial
  • Hercules-based environments
  • Hardware and licensing considerations
  • What level of CICS functionality is realistically achievable in a home lab

Thanks in advance for any guidance or lessons learned.

Hey Michael,  What you're looking for is possible up to a point.   What you will run into with solutions other than zD&T / ADCD is the ability to run the most current releases of CICS. For example, the current GA release, CICS/TS 6.3, requires at least z14 hardware or newer, and z/OS 2.5 or later to install and run.

(You can check the hardware and software requirements for all currently supported CICS versions here: CICS Transaction Server for z/OS)

If all you're interested in are general concepts, running "older" out of support versions on a "lesser" platform and operating system can be somewhat useful, but CICS is a continually evolving product that is still being actively developed and enhanced.   For example, here is what was new in CICS/TS 6.1 which is now 2 releases "back" from the current 6.3, and right now as we speak I'm involved in beta testing "the next release" which has even more "new and cool" stuff in it.

Some of the activities you mentioned, CPSM, MRO (IPIC), etc. require running multiple regions/address spaces to be able to explore adequately so unless you can tolerate measuring response time with a sundial, you're going to need some pretty healthy hardware to run all that.

Then there are all the licensing issues to contend with if you're self-hosting it all on a home lab.  Z trial / z Explore (which I admit I have no experience with other than knowing they exist), might be easier to use to do what you want.
