Hello

I have a IBM 38L7624 LTO-7 HH SAS loader drives that has an error 6 on start up following a tape getting mangled in the system. I cannot get the drive into test mode as per the manual as it gets stuck on error 6. I was expecting to be able to find mechanical spare parts for these common drives easily and , for the moment, I cannot find anything. Repairing LTOs drives seems to be a very dark science and I don't really get why. I cannot find any tech manuals on this drive. I find that weird in view of how expensive they are new.

Any ideas would be most welcome. Thank you

I was getting recursive error 6 & 7 on 2 drives for no reason that I could find. I took off the top of the drives, compared the drive mechanisms and could not find anything very strange.

Then I realised that neither of the drives were precisely at the start points. the pickup arm was not at its start point and the cassette mechanism was not fully at its start point either. I carefully wound the cogs of both mechanism back to their respective start points.

After restarting the drives, placing scratch cassettes in the mouths, I managed to get into the mechanical test menu and launch load tests and full tests. Now both drives are working fine.

All I can deduce is that the drives are mechanically very sensitive to position and struggle with incoherences.

I hope this helps someone.

Christopher,

Have you looked for the documentation on IBM Support: Fix Central?

Go to https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral select

Product Group -> System Storage

System Storage -> Tape Systems

Tape Systems -> Tape drives

Tape Drives -> TS2270 Tape Drive

Then select "TS2270 Setup Operator and Service Guide"

Hello Kevin,

Thank you very much for the guide to the manual, that I did not have it. Extremely useful for troubleshooting and understanding.

But are there any new spare parts left for these machines ?
