Hi Community,

I hope you're all doing well.

I am looking to install IBM Cloud Pak for Data on-premises and need your assistance. Could you please guide me through the following:

  1. How can I deploy IBM Cloud Pak for Data on-premises?
  2. What are the hardware, software, and infrastructure requirements for an on-premises deployment?
  3. Are there any official resources or step-by-step documentation available for this purpose?

I have been struggling to find the right resources and detailed instructions to proceed with the installation. A step-by-step guide would be immensely helpful.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Best regards,
Muhammad Shoaib

Hello Muhammad,

yes, you can run it on-prem, but you need the infrastructure to run a RedHat OpenShift Cluster on-site. Not just only the tiny test cluster, but at least a few nodes (with n > 6 at least).

CP4D is a dreadful big conglomerate which is not easy to install on your private testing system. So better go to IBM Cloud or IBM TechZone (you can get an account there as a business partner), try it out and try to find out, which components you really need on-site at your customer. Forget about playing around with "at home" aka "on-prem" before heading to the customer.

Cheers

Roland

Here’s a professional and concise response for the IBM Community post:

Hi Muhammad Shoaib,

Great to see your interest in deploying IBM Cloud Pak for Data on-premises! I’d be happy to guide you in the right direction.

  1. Deployment Steps:

    • IBM Cloud Pak for Data on-premises can be deployed on Red Hat OpenShift. The process typically involves setting up your OpenShift cluster first and then installing Cloud Pak for Data on top of it using the ibm-cp-data operator.
    • You’ll need to plan for creating projects (namespaces) and configuring storage, network, and access controls during deployment.
  2. Hardware, Software, and Infrastructure Requirements:

    • Hardware: Ensure sufficient CPU, memory, and storage capacity. A standard setup requires a minimum of 3 master nodes and several worker nodes depending on your workloads.
    • Software: Red Hat OpenShift (minimum version 4.6), compatible Kubernetes, and container storage options are mandatory.
    • Detailed prerequisites are listed in IBM’s documentation linked below.
  3. Resources and Documentation:

To streamline your installation, I recommend using the IBM License Service to monitor resource usage and keep track of licensing requirements.

Let me know if you need further help or have specific questions during the setup process!

Best regards,
Ethan Levi
