It won't help with option flags, but for command comparison, you can look at Bruce Hamilton's Rosetta Stone for Unix at http://bhami.com/rosetta.html. ------------------------------ Bruce ------------------------------

Excellent summary. First thing I would add is to use Linux, if you can in your environment, for the monitoring server. It opens up more opportunities for various software unless you like to compile your own on AIX. The Toolbox is getting better all the time, but it can't duplicate every piece of FLOSS ...

I think you would want to put that in the aliases database. Bruce

Outlook is the only client that I have found that will handle uuencoded attached files. All others and the Linux world has deemed uuencode old standards and have turned away from it even though it works. In the Linux world, they expect you to use MIME. I have heard that there is a "mpack" program that ...

It depends upon what type of server. Both have their strengths. IMHO, Linux would be useful in situations where open source software is utilized, such as a web server or even a file server. I have not worked in many environments with a large amount of Linux, so I don't know about virtualization, or load ...

We are in the same situation. Like many commercial production facilities, our sensitive critical systems are behind a firewall (multiple actually) and are not allowed direct access to the internet for security reasons. Have you heard about the recent cyber security events? I recently read a survey that ...

How is it that I can reply to this discussion, but I cannot create a new one, being told that I am a non-member? ------------------------------ Bruce ------------------------------

We only have one server that has more than a few toolbox RPMS installed. We don't update those (or any) RPMs very often unless there is a severe security issue because of the hassle of getting those RPMs to it, and if it ain't broke... ------------------------------ Bruce -------------------- ...

So if you were compiling for the masses, what features would you include and which would you exclude? Or would you: rsync-3.2.3-1.aix6.1.ppc.rpm rsync-feature1-3.2.3-1.aix6.1.ppc.rpm rsync-feature2-3.2.3-1.aix6.1.ppc.rpm rsync-feature1_2-3.2.3-1.aix6.1.ppc.rpm rsync-feature1_2_3-3.2.3-1.aix6.1.ppc.rpm ...

I have to come to IBM's defense, at least partially. Most of the dependency problems are not IBM's fault. It is open source software developer's fault. I've worked on Linux servers and desktops that when one package is installed, it has up to several dozen dependencies. My impression is that the developers ...

The gnupg2 in the toolbox is reportedly compatible with pgp. Lots of info on the gnupg.org site. I would install it and test with a non-critical file. ------------------------------ Bruce Landrum ------------------------------

Like most open source software, it has a flag during configuration for enabling ldap before compilation. Bruce Landrum UNIX/TSM/Storage System Administrator STPNOC | belandrum@stpegs.com Phone (361) 972-8309 PO Box 289 | Wadsworth, TX 77483

Depending on LDAP is a problem for us as well. We do not use ldap for any purpose. I personally don't see the need to install and maintain software that is never going to be used. ------------------------------ Bruce Landrum ------------------------------

yum depends on an internet connection. Many secure servers do not have access to the internet, including ours. Just because that is the way you do it, doesn't mean everyone else does it that way. ------------------------------ Bruce Landrum ------------------------------

It could be a libpath problem. I have found that some software requires the AIX libraries first and then the freeware/lib, and other software requires the reverse. Depends upon which libraries are included with toolbox rpms. ------------------------------ Bruce Landrum ------------------------- ...

Years ago in a previous life and AIX version, I found a perl (I think) script that allowed me to work with incoming emails by putting it into the smrsh system and redirect via .forward. I am in need of this again but I cannot find any reference to it or any other script that I could use in a web search. ...
