  • 1.  Which file to download to upgrade v7.1 to v7.2

    Hi,

    I am having problems upgrading to v7.2 from v7.1 on AIX POWER7. 

    I have used FLRT and downloaded the various .bff files but I cannot seem run the installation.

    7100-05-12-2320 to 7200-02-05-2037

    I have attempted to install the file  bos.rte.7.2.5.0.U  separately with installp  but I receive this message:

    0503-438 installp:  This function of installp requires a list of
                        installable filesets to be provided.

    I have attempted smit update_all without success.

    Should I not be able to run an update to migrate from V7.1 to v7.2?

    I assumed running update all in the directory that contains the .bff would be sufficient but the update fails stating the above bos.rte.7.2.5.0 file which is why I attempted to install it separately

    I also used the U884080.bff installation, which also failed.

    I am on the wrong path and which file should I use to update to v72?  I am attempting an upgrade not a new install.

    Jane,

    You must boot from 7.2 media to perform an OS migration from 7.1 to
    7.2. The bffs are incremental updates and cannot be used that way. You
    might still need to update after migrating, so hang on to those bffs.

    Hi Jane,

    You need to download the AIX 7.2 ISO images from ESS (Entitled Software Support - https://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/ess/landing/index.html), then burn a DVD or mount them from the VIOS repository via a VSCSI vtopt, and boot from them.

    No need for physical dvd

    Download the iso
    Sftp to vio, place in the VMLibrary directory
    Mkvdev to create virtual dvd drive on lpar
    Then loadopt
    And boot 

    I forget the directory name the images go in.  "df" command should show it
    Something like /var/vio/VMLibrary

    If you don't see it, you may not have an optical library built yet
