    Hi Marvin.

The vHMC image includes the a custom Linux OS, so you do not need to install an OS first.
The following article gives the details (Power8/9/10 all supported for the vHMC):

    Marvin,

    Hi, good day to you.

You install the vHMC "natively" on the POWER platform, check https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power9?topic=power-installing-hmc-virtual-appliance-powervm-logical-partition for details.

    All the best, Steve

I run vHMC on x86.  We have geographically distributed VM servers.  This works well for us.  Redundancy, etc.  Really easy to do a flash copy before upgrades, etc.  Love it.  Would never go back to a dedicated hmc appliance.  Was too much of an upgrade treadmill, especially since I like to stay very current.  And, yes, I have discovered the maximum number of HMCs which can support a single Power system (three, at last attempt).

Anyone fire up vHMC on the new half wide Power S1012?  Have your Power systems side by side in the same rack?
